Question for the "folksy" guys in here.

I don't hunt much anymore (too many idiots in the woods), but I do have a Marlin 336 .30-30, as well as a .54 cal muzzle loader for Elk (lived in Colorado for a few years). I prefer sheath knives to folders for hunting, since I find cleaning guts out of slipjoints to be onerous.

I generally prefer the blued steel and walnut look, but after years of trying hard to be a "traditionalist" I'm having to recognize that there are situations where modern materials simply make more sense. I don't think I'll ever develop a warm spot for plastic stocks, but stainless has its place, as does good laminated wood that doesn't get saturated in the moisture.

I met a guy at the range a couple of weeks ago who had much the same to say. He had some $1200 into a nice Weatherby that he now no longer wanted to take into the wet, rainy Oregon woods. He was sighting in a composite stocked Winchester 700 with a baked-on finish.

So after years of divesting myself of Glocks and other plastic guns, I recently bought a couple more (Walther PPS and a Glock 17L), and I have an AR that I built from the ground up (very little plastic). My BR rifle is a Savage with a stainless barrel and lam stock. But I do own a bunch of older S&W revolvers, too, as well as single action Rugers, so I'm all over the map...

:thumbup:Weather hunting with a bolt gun or leaver gun, my two companions are there with me, and a slip joint too. Hunting is on the back burner for a while, but if I go on a while longer I will return to the woods.

Heres my Tools for hunting...
Down state Michigan below Bay City I hunt with one of two pistols, Both S&W N Frame 44Mags.
Above Bay City an Old Marlin 32 Win Special or an Old Remington 700BDL 5digit S/N (OLD)!!!.
We did a good bit of Coyote and Squirrel hunting this year with Henry 22 Rimfire Lever Actions... Big Fun and great shooters!!!
I do my Shotgun hunting with a Spanish Made 28Ga Side by Side...It's on a 410 frame has double triggers and hits stuff like a Bazooka!!!
I used to use a Bear Recurve for Bowhunting but since I had my left arm wrecked I don't Bowhunt anymore...

I still hunt with the first rifle that I received from my Dad.
A Winchester mod 71 in .348 I also carry A SA Colt 2 gen .45 long colt with a 4 5/8s barrel. Also a Randall #1 with stag. Made in 1969. and a Case stag moose in my pocket.

I started off being into tactical knives like Scrapyard and Spyderco but recently have really felt that I prefer the warmth and practicality of old classics and wood ,leather and carbon steel. I have a forged camp knife with burl handle that has replaced my Busse and Scrapyard choppers.

I just picked up a bone handled GEC Scout that has bumped my Benchmade and Caly3 from EDC.

I also have a Ross rifle bayonet that was totally wrecked that I restored into a nice 100
year old sheath knife. I don`t have an àfter`photo but here is the before pic.

It is away getting a sheath.

I have only started to really get into guns since the traditional thing happened so my first handgun is an antique S&W top break DA in .44 Russian. Similar to this one but mine has not been refinished and still has the old S&W grips.

I think they did a hell of a job on it though and am considering it for mine since the nickel is so worn off the refinish would not hurt the resale much.

I also have been given by a buddy who is to old to hunt the typical Canadian bush guns,
a sporterized SMLE .303 and a old Winchester 1200 pump 12 gauge with a very long barrel with a little tiny dot sight. Both fantastic practical firearms that have harvested meat and protected homesteads for several generations.
I plan to take good care of them but still use them once in a while.

Like Anthony I bow hunt for Elk and Deer. Gave up the rifles about 7-8 years ago... For me it is so much more exciting, as well as frustrating at the same time...
As for the guns, I prefer old ones. For quite a few years I collected old Winchesters. Pre-64 model 70's, 86's, 92's and 94's...
The craftsmanship on the older guns is so much better than the new ones, plus when your carrying around a gun that is 50-90 years old, there is a very nostalgic feel.... My favorite for hunting was a Pre-64 model 70 300 H&H..

As for knives, I don't get to carried away and really prefer smaller knives for working on game. Last year the knives of choice were an older Western bird & trout sheath knife and Case mini trapper. I do have a Dozier sheath knife in D2 that I keep in my pack though, just in case....

Well fellas, as promised here is my gear set up- I picked up the SBH on the left today and I am thrilled with my purchase! All are chambered in .44 mag. including the Henry Big Boy Deluxe- knives are Knives of Alaska Bush Camp Knife (in D2) with Cub Bear (not bear cub in 440c)- and of course an autographed SixGuns and Hell I was there by Elmer Keith.

Winchester 94 (1941, 1947 vintage) in .32WS w/Silvertip loads; Ruger SBH & Garrett Hammerhead loads; Buck 119; Case Stockman. Haven't been hunting in years, but maintaining the battery for when the time comes again...

thx - cpr

ps - corpmanup - congrats on that SBH. I Love mine, it was a gift from the wife 10+ years ago. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

I hunt Rosevelt's elk with a Remington, model 760' .270 caliber, and i skin and butcher them with a Schrade sharpfinger and a Marbles drop point woodsman. Dale H.

My favorite plinking rifle's a Savage 29A that was my grandfather's- pump, octagon barrel and some of the nicest walnut I've ever seen. It may face some competition, though- I got a nice new Ruger 10/22 for Christmas.

As for the knives, how's a Cattaraugus 225Q, a Western 66 and a Case large stockman in black bone grab you? :)

Nice Pete Semich. I have one that I picked up from him at a show a few years back. Its the only "fixed" blade knife I take with me hunting or fishing. He does excellent work.

Deer I hunt with my grandfather's old Marlin 30-30 lever action or my grandfather's Ruger Superblack Hawk 44 mag. No scope.

I have several older 12 ga. and 410 my dad bought me when he knew I was going to be born.

I have a few older Stevens 22 that I love to shoot.

I've had people ask where you put the clip in. They are amazed when you pull the rod out and put the 22's in the tube.

Thanks 65hoss! I've lost the card Pete gave me so I've lost contact with him or I would post his info here. The Ruger is an Alpha Precission lightly customized Old Model Vaquero in .44 Mag. in 4 5/8" barrel. The stag knife is Pete's well heat treated 440C and scrimshawed by his wife. I've been well pleaed with both!

Synthetic??? No way. 30-30, lever action, open sights. 1095 steel in everything, revolvers, and knee high leather boots...............forever. If you can't find a vintage Winchester, go with the Marlin. Henry has slso started making a 30-30 to make up for the totally stupid decison of the Winchester management to stop producing the 30-30. And the Henry product is 100% made in the U.S.A.

Gents, let's try to stay somewhat on topic for this forum, thanks.
