Hey guys. So i saw this thread today about this other fourmite's emerson that was reground by our buddy Tom Krien. i saw that and was like "that is freaking awsome! it is exactly what i would like a knife to have!"

So i was wondering, how many of you guys have had a kershaw reground by Tom? If you have, would you post a pic or two so i can see it? i am seriously considering sending in my Lahar for him to regrind down to that .01 area. For only like $45 or so with shipping, you really cant beat it.

Also, what do you all think of his work, communication, ect, ect? I have read alot about him and I know that he is working with Dan Koster with K9 knives (I trust Dan, so thats alot of points in Tom's favor :D).

A lil background to my lil scheme that my poor self will barely be able to pull off............

I want to "customize" my Lahar. I have talked to STR about handle scales (about double what Tom charges for a regrind). I have yet to send it out to STR for lack of funds (he needs to see the knife to know if he has the right tools to drill the holes in the new scales), as i would want him to go ahead and make the new scales if he could actually work on it. Wouldnt make sense otherwise (if you read this STR, thats why i havnt sent it out to you).

Well seeing that reground Emerson, i got to thinking, that would be awsome if the Lahar was that thin (and sharp :D :D :D) with new g-10 scales. thus this crazy plan of mine.

thanks guys!

sorry for the bad pic.

Do a search in this forum. At least I think it was this forum...Tom did a regrind for Gary W.Graley a while back on a MC Ti/ZDP. Gary said the thing cut like a laser. I remember the pics...the coating was gone and the blade was paper thin at the edge. Price wise he said Tom did it for a steal...you wouldn't know anything about stealing would you OL?

I'm interested in seeing the folders Dan and Tom put together. I've been following their fixed blade adventures, and I do believe they are onto something!

yeah, thats the one i was thinking of. i will have to find that thread. i wouldn't know anything about stealing *inocent face* :D

on to searching!

ok folks, i am sending a PM to Tom Krien inquiring about it. It's gonna be fun. Hopefully, with a paycheck coming in on a regular basis, I may be able to have this done in a month or so. Which makes me happy :D

so let me ask this, pending STR's color choices and ability to work on the Lahar, what color scales should i get for it guys?

ok, so I have talked to Tom about it. As soon as I have the money its gonna be headed his way for the regrind :D :D :D.

now my only question is, what color scales from STR?

Hmmmm...let's see...if it were me, I'd get something to match the scales on the new Groove Thomas gave...oh, I didn't get that, did I...

I'm new to this forum, but Tom and I have known each other for a couple years. Nobody can give you a sharper edge than Tom. His knives are ridiculously nice, too. He maintains an active web presence in his forum over on the USN and is quick to answer emails and PMs. He also will bend your ear for a while if you call him.

These are my Krein knives:

In addition to these, I have two more knives on order with him and one back at his shop to have new handle slabs installed. I can not recommend him highly enough.

I have read a lot about him and I know that he is working with Dan Koster with K9 knives (I trust Dan, so thats a lot of points in Tom's favor ).

Dan's relationship with Tom was what led me to trusting him enough to order one of his Bushcraft knives.

Hey guys. Tom will be getting my lahar for a regrind sometime next week. So hopefully all will go well. There will be one issue which Tom should be able to deal with. One of the screws on the scales is stripped to the point of i cant get it off. Other than that, he should be able to do the regrind with no issues.

OL...

I'd been wondering about Tom's regrinds for awhile and asked some rather pointed questions about them in the General forum (since moved to Maintenance, etc.).

All the answers were positive, although no one ever answered my second question. It was aimed at ferreting out info to make a decision about having this done on a ZT, but considering the primary design goals of the ZT, I probably wouldn't do it...plus my 0300s are so perfectly balanced in the hand that I'm afraid they'd lose that if that much blade materal was removed.

My questions are down aways in the thread...

I'm sure your Lahar will come back scary sharp!

Sounds cool! What kind of grind are you getting? Full flat? Hollow? Zero grind? I would imagine the thumbstud would get in the way if you wanted a full flat grind.

prolly the hollow grind. or just a simple flat grind. i basically just want the primary grind to stay the same height, like the knife in the link i posted in my original post, but at that .010 thickness where the primary meets the edge grind. as for the edge grind, hollow would be nice. it would be super sharp and would tree top hairs with ease i would think.

pardon my ignorance, but the search is hating me right now, and i dont feel like racking my brain. what is a zero grind?

A hollow grind would make the Lahar a folding laser.

A zero edge grind has only a single bevel. No secondary bevel for the edge.

Not quite. A chisel grind is ground on one side only. A zero grind is ground on both sides, but with no secondary bevel for the edge.

Another expression of the zero grind is "scandi grind".

Zero is also sometimes used to describe a convex EDGE grind (not the primary), but that seems to be something only the Busse guys do.

Well my Lahar left for Mr. Krien last week on March third. I havn't heard from him and the stupid tracking number is still saying that:

Label/Receipt Number: 0307 0020 0003 0504 7148
Status: Processed

Your item was processed and left our LITTLE ROCK, AR 72231 facility on March 5, 2008. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

I have PM'd Mr. Krien to see if he has recieved it, but I have not heard back yet...........I am nervous

The last 3 knives I've gotten thru USPS have all been that way...no updates on the tracking numbers until they arrive at the destination city. USPS might be cheaper, but UPS keeps you up to date every time the package is scanned.
