Question to Buck 112 & 442 owners

Trax,
In case you're interested, a nice 112 with black micarta scales just came up for auction on ebay. It's a little pricy though. The starting bid is $49.95

Thanks! I can't tell how the Micarta looks; but the knife looks OK (San Diego? You didn't leave it behind when you moved, did you???) :D

Today I tried out that black linen Micarta on an old slab sided 110 that I'll reblade [eventually]; it does not look as good on a flat sider as it does on a bulgy sider...

It doesn't look as bad as it seems here; it's not buffed out yet, and the scratches show up worse on the scan...

But the big disappointment is that crescent shape at the bottom middle; that's the layer boundary, where the linen itself is exposed... :( because the scale is flat, and the linen layer is flat, it doesn't show up right... :grumpy:

But it's not a disaster; it'll just look all black when it's done, instead of layers...

For the next re-scale job, I'll try the canvas Micarta... ;)

On the plus side, I found the Buck liners & Micarta scales will take .060" brass brads very nicely, without the need of peening...plus I used my router w/a Linoleum finishing bit to trim the two curved surfaces; that worked good too...

And using double-sided tape to fasten a knob to the back so I could hold it against a belt sander to sand the surface worked out also... :)

Trax,
I just sent you a private email with a photo of the black canvas micarta 112 that I have. And no, I didn't leave it in San Diego. It's been with me all the time.

Thanks, Mike! :D That looks real good; I'm going to have to try that canvas Micarta next. ;)

You really have to look at it close to appreciate it... :)

The canvas pattern is difficult to pick up in a photo, particularly since it's black. It's a lot more noticable in real life.

I have a piece of each here. In fact, here it is, on the bottom (linen on top) -

But your pic was quite detailed; I could make out the weave.

Perhaps what I have been calling canvas is actually linen. The top photo looks more like what is on my 112.

I'd say your first choice was correct; here's a slice from it -

I'd bet it was canvas.

Yep! That's it. I can tell by the very slight ding to the left of the rocker pin. The weave pattern is not anywhere near that large at normal magnification though.

Hmmmm...Maybe it is linen...I finished mounting the other linen scale for the 110 I'm rescaling...but I can't decide what blade to use in it...so I haven't buffed the scales out yet...plus I can't help but notice that yours has years and years of wear on it... :D

This is getting curiouser and curiouser... ;)

What can I say? For being a 34 year old user (and a heavy user at that), I think it's in pretty good shape. The blade has almost no wear at all; The scales, while they may have some marking, are basically intact; and the brass bolsters have only minor scratches that can easily be buffed out. The truth of the matter is, the knife has so much sentimental value that I wouldn't buff out the scratches for anything. Most of them have memories attached. That is particularly true for the sheath. There are stories behind most scuff marks! :D On the other hand, your point is well taken. New black micarta is going to look different, even if it is an exact match.

I had a point??? :D ;)

A knifemaker on another forum, in response to my question, said that canvas Micarta wouldn't buff out well, but linen would. I'd guess you were right the 2nd time; I don't see Buck picking a scale material that wouldn't look good...On the other hand, he did say that canvas Micarta made a good grip...
