how long do you hold an item that someone has said "I'll take it" and then has not paid/communicated etc... I don't want to miss out on a sale - and to me - If i say I'll take it - means I'll contact you immediately or paypal immediately.

anyway - looking for opinions on this one...

Personally with modern internet, cell phone and e-mail, I would give someone that said "I'll Take It" 48 hours MAX. to contact me again.

Then the item goes back up.

I think who you are dealing with would have a bearing on how long I would wait. If he is an old timer on the forums with a good rep I'd cut them more slack than a newbie with just a couple of posts. Maybe that's being predjudiced but once a deal is struck good communication is very important.

I agree with Keith that sh*t does happen sometimes but the buyer should understand that if he was unable to communicate that the deal could be lost.

Someone I didn't know: 36 hours.

Someone I knew: 48 hours.

Someone I knew and was friends with/done business with before: until they got back to me - even a week. I'd even email and see if they were OK.

this is kind of my feeling

24 hours for a stranger
for anyone I know through BF - basically as long as it takes you lazy bastards :)

If I made a deal with someone and then for some reason was unable to communicate with them, I would totally understand if the decision was made to sell to someone else. It's not fair to expect someone to hold onto something for an indeterminate amount of time. One week is my time limit, but I have no problem with whatever time the other person figures is fair. It is up to me to come through with my half of the deal and if I snooze, I lose.

48 hours i think is fair.

in fact, maybe you should put something in your posts to that effect. "buyer must make arrangements to pay within 24 hours, or item will be made available to others, and you will be shot."

I disagree. Some ebay sellers put crap like that in their listings and I think it's a major turn off. There's a person who sells knives on the forums who always puts something like "no BS" in his ads and I've never emailed him.

This is bladeforums. It's just not neccessary.

If I was to say "I will take it'" my very next move would be to contact them about how they want payment.
I mean they are online when they post that so why can't they go ahead and finish the deal.
I would give them until the next morning and email them,if they do not respond by that night I figure they no longer want it.

48 hours is plenty - if I lost out because I was not able to get back to you via email, phone, carrier pigeon, then in no way can I be sore for you selling it elsewhere.

Whenever I post "I'll take it" I immediately send an e-mail to the person, asking them how they want payment. It's true that emergencies come up, and that's even more reason to immediately contact the person by e-mail after you post. I think it's inconsiderate to just post the "I'll take it" and then not contact the person within 24 hours. If I'm selling and I don't have any contact but the posting, I'll start posting/e-mailing after 24 hours, to find out if the person is really committed to buying. It's understandable that sometimes people act on impulse and then need to back out, but they should do so in a straightforward manner, as soon as possible. And there's nothing more annoying/lame than the old "I've sent you 3 e-mails, didn't you get them" line of BS.

You guys seem to be in kind of a hurry.

I check back with them in a week or so.

Some times it takes a few months to get the money.

If I am in a hurry, I will mention it, otherwise 60/90 days does not seem to bother me much.

This all relates to people getting me my money to me, then I ship them their knife

I bet you like to like to spend your afternoons sitting in your rocking chair on your porch just sippin' iced tea. I bet you talk reeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaal sloowwwwwwww! ;) :D

48 hours is long-enough to wait to hear back from someone who has said that they want to buy/trade with you.

Some of this confusion seems unnecessarily complicated. Posting "I'll take it!" in the thread is just a courtesy to other readers, to let them know the knife's been spoken for. I have a standard email format when I want a knife that's posted for sale, and I send it first, then post in the thread.

""If (knife posted) is still available, let me have your name & address and I'll get a USPS money order for $(amount needed) out to you right away.""

Then I tack on my forum name, and my name & address & phone number.

Acceptance and information all in one, and when I get the return email with the seller's information, I stamp & address an envelope and head off to the post office the next day it's open.

Unfortunately, disaster is always just around the corner. If someone says he wants a knife, but gets called up that night and sent to clean up tsunami damage, losing out on the knife I'm selling is the least of his problems. There will always be another knife, if life prevents him from buying mine now.

isn't it necessary? everyone's offering their 24, 48, 36-hr policy... why not just state it up front? maybe he doesn't have to put any sort of consequence, but i don't see anything wrong with stating your terms up front, since you're going to enforce them anyway.

btw, i've not put anything like that in my FS posts, it was a suggestion ending with a joke. it's all good.

wait 2-3 months for payment?? not me, i say maybe a week, when i sell something its usually to finance something else, & i wont wait that long. maybe if the buyer and i made a deal or something, but usually i would want the payment w/in a week, if you are not in the position monetarily to spend the money for several months ya shouldnt buy it anyway imho, its outta your price range, or ya dont want it very badly.

Yup,
I sure would like sitting on my porch,,,if my wife were there.

Tea to sip,,,maybe with a little some thing in it,,,Sweet tea,,,sure why not.

There are those who have in the past thought I was a fast talker,,I like your version better.

I also like long moonlit walks holding hands with my wife.

Sounds like you are rushing through life,,,relax,,have some fun.

If you need the money fast, communicate that in you for sale post, and confirm it after they say " I'll Take it"

Look me up in the for sale forum, I got the money for two of the knives I sold in my last for sale post in the last 10 days, one just yesterday, I practice what I preach.
I did not think of knives as a "Hurry" hobby.

I want to spread the Knife culture, I do this in part by being Patient.

Like how I am dealing with you.

Think about it

Live well help others,,,you might like it
