Question

Hey Gin and Karen, hang in there.

For seventeen years, Max the cat made it his goal to find ways to aggravate me. He was a smart-ass and always had some sort of sardonic comment to make about me, or the dog, or people in general. I should have left him at the Humane Society where the kids and I got him. Talk about a superior attitude! You should have heard his comments when I read about dogs pining for their deceased masters--something to the effect, "you feel sick yet? I gotta make arrangements for a nicer gig."

That said, I still miss him and talk to him at his burial place from time-to-time.
His kidneys failed, apparently a common problem with older cats.

All you can do is all you can do. Hope it is treatable and he is back annoying you soon.

The only one of my four legged bubbies that ever got into something she shouldn't have was Rook (Lab/Shar-pei mix). She ate a tube of my wife's jesso (canvas primer). Took her to the vet, they gave her charcoal and I picked her up later that night. Tough dog. She's a little chunkier and a little less bouncy than she was when she was 2 but still running strong at 8.

Cats are tough, too. Guinevere (AKA "Evil") had a tumor removed a couple of years ago and is still just as mean as she was ten years ago. And we fished Timmorn (AKA "Floof") out of the street after being hit by TWO cars. Not a mark on him. Sweetest cat I've ever seen. Only got 7 lives left, though.

I'll keep Sheeba in my prayers. You hang in there, Gin.

Sheba's been on my mind all day...hope she is doing better, smoke continues...

For Karen too...

.

They are keeping her at the hospital overnight. She has perked up a little, but it's still too early to tell what's going to happen. She at least responds now when they walk by her cubbie hole. So the liquids and calcium are helping. I'm encouraged. Karen is still pretty bummed. We are going to a dinner theater tonight, so I hope she can enjoy it. Me too I guess. Thanks for all the concern.

Great...just sticking around is the best thing...smoke and kitty song will continue.

.

Well I wouldn't send Smoke for just anyone's cat but I'll send some Smoke for Sheba and her pets, Gin and Karen.Hope she gets better soon.

BTW Edutsi...I mixed a little catnip in with the sweet grass.

Hope it helps...

Just picked Sheba up from the hospital. Unfortunately the clinic where she was, isn't open on weekends and the regular hospital is $200 a day. So they sent us home with an IV bag and I will give her injections of IV under her skin which will be absorbed and hopefully she will continue to mend. The dr. are sure she got into some antifreeze. Her kidney function is very very high but she is looking good and walking a little. She wants to take the catheter out of her leg, but they left it in in case we have to rush to emergency. This dr has only seen one other animal survive with the kidneys like they are so she is very hopeful. Going to be a long week end taking care of her, but we are glad she is mending. I do hope we don't have an emergency over the weekend....or I wish I had pet insurance. Thanks for all the concern. We're not out of the water, but I've invested $400 in her and I think she will pull through......never to go outside again. Wonder if she thinks that is worth it?? Ever wonder what animals are thinking?

Good news, Gin.

Hands-on care of her will actually help you and Karen. You are DOING something.

The cat will be aggravated with the treatment, but hell, that's what cats do.

Hope all turns out well. The good news is that animals don't know how to give up hope.

Great news...more smoke and catnip for Sheba tonight!

Gin,

Glad to hear your beautiful cat is doing better.

Years ago the City put out rat poison and half the cats on the block went to cat heaven. The half-dead rodents looked like lunch, but the poison worked faster on the cats then it did on the rats. Since then, we keep ours inside, which is just as well since the coyotes are hard on cats out where we are now.

Apparently, and sadly, cats just love antifreeze. Seems like every year, we get a TV story on dead cats resulting from some citizen draining his radiator in the street.

Just thought I'd update you on The Sheba kittie.

She is doing much better and I'm sure is going to recover fully. :D We spent the weekend sticking her with big needles and filling her up with IV fluids and she is drinking water. Doesn't seem too hungry yet, so the vet gave her a B12 shot this AM to try to increase her appetite. She's a little bit wobbly still, but can now jump on the bed without help. Thanks for all the prayers and smoke. She is such a pretty cat and really a good cat, now that I've gotten to have her inside. She only sits at the patio door and meows in the morning to go out. Then I guess she gives up by lunch time and just lays on the deer skin and sleeps. We will have her in on Thursday to have her blood tested again to see if her kidneys have recovered. So until then we just keep giving her liquids and hope her appetite picks up. Now I bet if we let a bird go in the house she'd get that appetite back.  :D

Excellent news. Here's to Sheba's continued recovery.

Oscar the Attack Cat would send his regards but he's currently busy guarding the shoes against theft.

Well of course Sheba's going to make it... now. Good news, Gin.

Satori, your shoe pic cracked me up. Cats love Foot Funk. They do! My fat, ancient tabby (the one that won't wear out, and still has 8 unused lives on tap) is known to stick her face right into a freshly doffed shoe.

"NO! For the love of G_d, NO!" I shout. The cat pulls it's head out of the shoe resentfully, like there's a Cat Treat® at the bottom of it.

Idiots. Fishy-breath, butt-sniffing idiots.

She's only been with me... 20 years now.

If the secret to longevity is inhaling footfunk, someone else can have it.
