i've looked at a few places online to order some stuff i'm having trouble finding locally and the shipping seems to be really high (8-10 bucks), and i'm nervouse about not being able to look them over before i order. should i just see if one of my local guys would order them and let me look them over before i purchase them, just wondered what you guys all do. i tried a search but didn't come up with much.

thanks
sam

I order 99% of all my knife purchases online. I'm either lucky or not too picky because I've never felt I got a bad knife, of course.... I'm sure it happens.

Some dealers like collectorsknives, cumberland or soonersateknives will inspect a knife per your request and give personalized service. I just bought two Queen knives , a swing-guard and a Mountain Man in amber bone, both sight unseen and I couldn't be happier. I had real concerns because a bunch of guys here have had problems with Queen MM pattern.

As far as shipping, as long as the rates keep going up , the cost passed on the consumers will go up. I try to take advantage of specials etc.

that makes me feel a better about ordering online, i think i'll just get a list up of stuff i can't find local and try to just make a couple of big orders to bundle the shipping together, and it'll seem like christmas when a box full of knives arrives at my house.

thanks

That's what I do :)

Sam,

If you look at the price at a brick and mortar store you will usually pay more than an online price with shipping and insurance.

Establish a relationship with whoever you work with. They will get to know you over time and you them. Less of a chance of unresolvable problems when the relationship is in place.

I am going to move this to good bad and ugly since the question is more appropriate there.

Quoted for truth

If your window shopping just keep looking, but when you are ready to buy it never hurts to drop an email introduction with any questions you may have about the knife before purchase, especially with traditional Slipjoints and the like.
Is it in fact in stock?
Can I see a picture of the actual knife? (especially Stag)
Do you mind inspecting the knife you will be sending me for any obvious flaws?
If you are about to spend $50 to $100+ on a production knife, these are not unreasonable requests IMHO, and I would not want to deal with anyone unwilling to comply.
Once you have broken the ice like this, and followed through with a purchase you have your relationship. That's good thing!

A couple of dealers I have had real good dealings with:
Roger at http://www.knifeworks.com
Bill at http://www.cumberlandknifeworks.com/index.php

Good luck!
