questions for the woodchucks

I don't know for sure, but don't see why there would be. It seems okay to the building industry as most all the framing lumber is treated with the stuff these days. So guess it doesn't effect the wood structurally (as far as they are concerned). It's supposed to be basically nontoxic to us. Having the wood chewed up certainly won't be any good!

I have a friend who mills exotic woods. He often uses varnish thinner and pours it all over into the holes on small pieces like you have to kill off bugs. He says it evaporates out by and by. (Not paint thinner, guess it's thicker or less volatile.) This would probably be like the acetone approach.

A secondary benefit to soaking in acetone is it helps dry the wood. It will run the moisture out then when it drys it will be pretty much ready to use. I cured a bunch of myrtle wood this way. Worked great. Yes you need to soak it not just wrap it up in a cloth the acetone will evaporate too fast. If you wanted to do smaller pieces you could cut it. Or soak 1/2 side at a time. Good luck.
