Questions regarding the ZT 300

PG5768,

Thanks so much for taking the time to post the comparison pictures, that gives a much better idea of the size difference of the two blades.

I'm not looking to buy a Strider, I'm sure they make a great knife but the ones I've used (folders) just didn't fit comfortably in my hand (the rear corner digs into my palm) if I used it for any length of time. I love my Spyderco's but then the knife I've carried most of the past several years as an EDC is my full sized BM Skirmish 630BK so I'm very use to the recurved blade and love it.

Who am I we kidding?.... Like most in this hobby I'm sure I'll probably end up buying both knives in time. Money is a bit tighter than usual right now so I just wanted to make sure that if i did go with the ZT 30x series that it wouldn't be regretted and by the feedback I've gotten I doubt it would be. I assume that the ZT Knives has a good warranty if it should fail for any reason? I always try to use the right tool for the job so I don't "plan" on abusing any of my knives.

Thanks again guys for the feedback as it has been extremely helpful.

Darn, missed a chance to give the classic BF answer, "Buy them both!"

ZT has what is probably the best warranty in the business. Plus, any small parts, like screws, pivots, torsion bars or pocket clips will be sent at no charge (just call or use their e-mail reply on their web site link).

Do you own both and prefer the Millie?
They're very different knives so I'm not comparing one against the other, really just trying to decide which will be my next purchase. I own several Spyderco's and love them all but I don't own any ZT's. I wish there was a place local in which I could handle the ZT 300. I'm concerned about the blade being/feeling a bit short and stubby but that's only going by photos and may not be an issue at all.
Thanks guys.

Yes, I owned both. I just traded my 0301 for something I "had to have". Yall know how it is. It is a good knife and is a monster, but the Millie is a better carry knife IMO as it has great blade length great ergos and weights next to nothing. I might buy another 0301 though. They are both great knives and I am sure you will end up with both in the end.

Will they cover it if you use it to pry something and break it? What about if you cut it in half with a blow torch?

Don't think intentional abuse is covered, but you could always try. The worst they could say is "No".:D

anybody have one of the ZT fixed blades? if you do, how do you like it? the local gun shop had a windfall of ZT's and i liked the look of the 0100 and 0121 fixed blades.

Cool, I'm interested in the 0100 as well. I saw a gentleman on YouTube from ZT knives saying they tested the strength of the 0100 and it took over 4000 pounds of pressure to snap/break the blade. Once again on YouTube I saw another guy, I believe he represents an online knife store drive it into a log and then break it in half by smacking it with a 2" X 4" used like a baseball bat. Of course none of this says anything with regards to how well it works as a KNIFE but I was surprised to see it break after hearing it took so much pressure to break one in the factory. Maybe it was already damaged before it was hit with the board.

It looks to be an interesting fixed blade, hopefully I get a chance to check one out sometime. ZT is putting out some very interesting knives in fact it's just a great time to be in this hobby as there are so many great knives on the market at reasonable prices.

KLJ The reason the knife broke in that test even though rated to take 4000 pounds to break is simple.

In the pressure test lateral pressure is gradualy applied to the blade to get an accurate reading of lateral strength.

In the vid the knife is driven /poiunded into a piece of wood. Then a 2x4 is swung like a bt against the handle of the knife. This applies not only considerable shock as well as lateral pressure and leverage to the blade. Trmendous physical forces are applied in such an impact.

Knives HAVE been designed and made which can with stand such abuse. They are generaly larger, thicker, forged and differentialy heat treated and made of different materials. For the most part they cost a LOT more than the ZT0100.

All I can say is this is the only folder I will ever need. Oh I might WANT more but this thing (ZT301) is just awesome. Sturdy, well built, great ergonomics on the handle, etc... I carry mine every single day.

You appears that the 30x series is very, very tough and a lot of knife for the money, how well does it cut?

I'm sure if it doesn't arrive sharp it wouldn't take long to touch it up on my Sharpmaker. Does it carry well in jeans or is it a bit too bulky? I carry a BM Skirmish most of the time so I have no aversion to carrying a large folder.

ZT will cover any breakage, and will send all out parts, except blades. Strider won't cover any "pimped" knives let alone cutting it with a blow torch. Strider will not cover any intentional modding or abuse, in fact, if you take your knife apart, the warranty has been compromised, so throw away your spanner. Read the Strider stickies on the green forum. Strider does NOT have an unconditional warranty, they simply have a fair one.

Kershaw's warranty and their customer service is among the best I have ever seen.

My brother recently snapped the tip off his Blur. I suggested he call them up so he did. He told them the truth about what had happened; he even admitted that he shouldn't have been prying with the knife but it was all he had at the time.

They told him to go ahead and send it in, so he did. A couple weeks later he received his damaged knife back along with a brand new Blur. So now he's got a one of a kind "tanto" Blur as well.

Read the ZT warranty again, if you use it to pry and snap the blade they will not fix it for free. Strider will.
And yes you are allowed to take it apart and clean it. That does not void the warranty.

As per Josh of Strider knives

If your folding knife has been modified we won't fix it so don't send it in
modified= if any tools were used on your knife to change its appearance Your warranty is void
Change the blade grind= void
Polish the screws, blade or titanium=void
Modify the handle=void
File your lock bar=void
Drill any holes in your knife=void
If you strip a screw we will repllace it for a charge
If you break the tip or chip the blade we will fix it no charge
If you take the knife apart and ruin the lock up thier might be a charge
***charges are detirmined on how long it takes us to fix it****
WE WILL NOT SEND OUT OR SELL ANY PARTS

No, it would not be. And Strider would probably charge the person for being stupid, just to get the parts back, it seems they are sick of such nonsense.. Thomas, just out of curiosity, if you happen to use a ZT in an emergency and it breaks like that strider, would it be covered?

What about if you cut your Strider in half with a blow torch, you covered?

I think that would be considered modding it and they wouldn't cover it, but RAT cutlery would. My point was that Kershaw doesn't have the best warranty. They do have a pretty good one, but not the best.

I really like some of those new RAT/ESEE knives.....they're on my short list as well.
