Another "Gee I just got a new knife thread". I had a killer day yesterday, got up at 5:00 am, worked on a 50 minute presentation due to be presented at noon at a Community Centre located two hours drive away, finished my presentation but then had to attend a funeral for my cousin's husband which was a further 2 hr drive from the place I presented at. At 9:30 pm I proceeded to drive the 4 hr trip home coming in just before 1:00 am. So I took the morning off and slept in. Just after taking my shower and getting dressed I was able to greet the mailman with not one but two packages with my name on it!
First off was the Koyote Mills Pattern Skinner. This is a Nesmuk'ish type/skinner knife. Specs are 5.25" blade, 0.095" thick 15N20 steel with ipe scales and brass bolts. Blade features Koyote's unique wide bevel convex grind.
The sheath by koyote girl really is a beaut featuring double stitching, variable stain and stamped patterns at the leather margins.
This thing has to be one of the absolutely most comfortable handles I've ever hung onto so far! Well see how well it holds up during hard work, but just holding it feels really, really nice!
Check out the ipe - this stuff just glows, not only comfy, but super attractive!
A couple of comparison shots:
Above - the scrapper 5 at 3/16" thick, Breeden bigpaw at 5/32", JK Kephart at 1/8" and Koyote Skinner at 3/32".
So its not the thickest knife of the bunch, but I expect it will do wonders at slicing. At almost 1.75" wide in places, the blade is plenty stiff, although I can produce a bit of flexing of it with my hands. I won't be batoning this through nasty stuff, but I'm sure it will do absolutely fine with normal batoning chores.
Did a couple of fuzzies, but I only have softwood around and that wasn't much of a test. The only thing I'm not sure on is the point, which is a bit more blunt than I like, albeit, this is part of the overall design. With this concern, I did a few drills into a cootonwood hearth for bow drill. To my surprise, it did a better job at drilling than the scrapper5 with its oh so sharp pointy point. Why? Well - it might be more bunt at the very tip, but the overall tip is much wider and that produces really great divots. So I'm happy with that!
One last bonus. That oh so fine koyote girl sheath fits the skinner wonderfully. It also fits my Breeden Big Paw and Scrapper 5 wonderfully. The Jk fits in it, but it is a bit looser then preferred. So not only did it come with a great fitting, great looking pouch sheath, but a highly versatile one at that which will sure to see some rotating action across different blades!
Okay, but WAIT THERE'S MORE.....My Rat Cutlery Izula contest knife arrived today also! How about that! A pink Izula to go with my battle worn white one.
The Izula came with the full kit which was a very unexpected surprise, that included a little ferro rod, split rings, clasp clip and whistle that locks onto paracord ends. I didn't take shots of those as they all were instantly integrated within my PSK.
The little Pink Izula is really quite cool, but I've been acquainted with this amazing little neck knife for a few months already. My wife has already laid dominion over this one. Good news is I get to reclaim my original orange breeden Kat knife from her now.
