quick poncho setups pic heavy

Nice work.

Sometimes the hood gets opened up by wind allowing rain to enter. I suggest that the hood be rolled up (twisted) and then folded over 3 times using the draw string to keep it together. It helps keep rain from dripping down.

The feet sticking out of one end is no big deal. Just put your legs into a large plastic garbage bag.

Nice pics! I have tried to use the poncho once for a over head tarp, but it wasn't long enough for the hammock I was using. For an emergency shelter those are some good ideas. I might have to try it out sometime during this season. Like someone suggested, pair it up with a couple of trash bags and you are set to go.

Thanks for the post bruddah. I just got a USGI poncho like that at the local surplus store, you have given me some ideas to work with, I really like the 3-sided one with ground mat.

Great pics. I really like the second setup.

Is this your "come hither" look? LOL

Hi all,

John that 2nd set up you used the is the one I use the most. I just put up this morning poncho next and above the canvas tarp I set up about 3 weeks back. Here is a pic of it I started a fire under the poncho and next to the leanto. I sat under and by that fire for a few hours today while kelly girl sniffed and howled about the smells of rabbits LOL The temp was is 21 degrees at 11: 15 am today and a breeze coming from the north. I was cozy as a bug in a rug be the fire but when I left it for a little while to go check on Kelly or get some more wood to cut up and put on the fire. I am planning on staying out under that set up tomorrow night ( kathy is going to visit here mom ) no sleeping bag or blanket just my kit and the carhart coat and the cloths on my back. I like to do these over nighters for fun and practice. When doing this type of thing it really show you how good your kit is and if it is worth a darn LOL

I just posted a few pics and did a little write up in a thread that Zach225a posted about his staying out for a night that poor guy did not have a good time. But that is what practice is all about. He said in his post that he is going to do it again so I bet he will have a better time then.

Greast job John on the pics a poncho is such a neat peace of gear to have with you.

KuPUpTD, thanks I have used this type of set up before when in was rainy. One time a friend and I set one up with a big clear drop cloth and had a fire under it to. During a thunder storm it is so cool you can see the storm and still have a fire and make coco LOL.
Some people do not like tarps but I sure do though LOL. You can make them up a lot of ways.

Yes is it a canvas tarp it is a 5 x 8 foot. The weight is a few pounds.
I really like the 6 x 8 foot the best. Like in this pic. It gives you more room to have it to sit or lay on. I had this set up in some ceder trees next to the house for fun.

I just took it down today. I have plans for another set up at a different part of the farm. LOL

I do not back pack like miles on end so I just roll them up and throw them over my shoulder jor carry them under my arm or some times will tie them to my pack when I carry a bigger pack, and a way I go. to set it up and play in the woods. LOL If I am not making knives I am playing in the woods.

Good stuff bro - Thanks for posting the pics so a rookie like me can learn something!

I all,

John I do not want to sound like I am bragging. I am not but I am fortunte to live where I live. I wish though LOL that I could go back to the West cost and hike and camp in the Big Bear Lake area Like I did when I was in the Marines. But I think havin as many fires as I have now would be a no no. LOL The mountains are so dang cool I think.

If I get the chance I am going to build a dried grass stalk leanto shelter like Tony did in his post of a little shelter ( alot of leaves ) that he made today while out on a hike. Did you see his post yet.

I use my usg ponco the most when i need to build a quick shelter, very nice setup RR. how much more room does the tepee set-up have than the others and does it help with the comdensation that pict talked about. Also I could see using that set-up with small fire under it provided it was high enough.

quiet bear when I look at your tarp and the BACKGROUND LOL I am so envus LOL
It make me think of the west cost and all. like Big Bear Lake area and stuff.

Cools shots bro

That second one is an interesting configuration. The first configuration can also be used with a hammock but it takes a bit more cord... though a little less if you cut poles for the corners.
