Quick review on Tan Buck-Strider Military folder..

Great looking knife. I like the mods. Did you buy it on-line? If so, can you say where?

Thanks.

I got the knife from a guy off this site .. dfcrane.. . It was not striped when I bought it though.. I did that myself.. Incase that is what you were asking..

Great post and great pics too.

I really dig the stripes.
It's hard to believe that it was your first time doing something like that--imagine what a little practice might lead to?

Allen.

Hey thank ya for the kind words.. Yeah I was pretty impressed with the way they turned out.. I wish I could do this all the time it was really enjoyable.. Im hunting another black blade knife just so I can do some more and get that practice..
~Jeff

jefff - thanks for the quick reply. Actually, the "mods" I was complimenting you on were the stripes you applied. Very nice job!

hehe oh yeah .. I had to go back up and read it again .. Sorry had a brain fart .. Thank you for the comments.. ;)

I've been looking at these but the steel has put me off.
How is the edge retention?
How's it's cutting ability?
Any thoughts appreciated.

Great review, BTW
:)

Well so far it is keeping right up with my CRKT M16 & M21 with the AUS8a steel .. the edge on it is pretty sharp right out of the box.. but it has what is known I believe as a working edge.. plenty sharp for my taste.. but you can re sharpen it at a different angle and achieve a better slicer I suppose.. I hit it once so far with the diamond steel I have just to get it shaving sharp and have not had to resharpen it yet so far..

I really have not worked this knife through a regiment of cutting test though.. seeing that I will be using it for regular real world stuff.. it has yet to be put to some of the cuts that maybe you guys might use it for.. I have opened mail with it and food and cut shoe string and para cord and a few card board boxes and speaker wire, and dug up some weeds by the play area in the park.. flicked it open at least 600 times lol and she is still the same knife as when I bought it.. (cept the stripes) I am very pleased with it and will keep ya informed on when the blade needs to be resharpened.. It is still plenty sharp for what I need it for.. It has lost it's shaving sharp edge but.. I am not shaving with it so it is still good to go..

I wanna do stripes on my knife too D:

Do you mind sharing how to go about doing it?

******* PLEASE USE COMMON SENSE AND CAUTION WHEN USING THESE CHEMICALS AND READ ALL SAFETY PERCAUTIONS.... THESE MATERIALS ARE CAUSTIC AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE TO YOU IF NOT USED PROPERLY*****
Sure..
Here is what I used..
"Dremel"
"Polishing pads"
"Gun Blue & rust remover" (firearms supply or sporting goods store)
"Naval Jelly" rust dissolver metal prep.. (Lowe's, Ace, or Home depot)
"Q-tips"
"Blue Magic" Metal Polishing cream (Auto Zone)
"Safety Glasses"
picture1204ds.jpg

First Use a good degreaser cleaner to clean the blade off, I used Dawn dish soap and tooth brush.. then I used a Q-tip to apply the Gun blue remover in a stripe pattern.. let it set for about 5 minutes then rinse off in hot water..

This left a darker grey finish.. So then I applied the Naval jelly with another Q-tip over the same spots.. and let it set for 20 minutes.... And rinsed it with hot water..

This almost got me down to the bare metal past the black oxide coating.. but it was still kinda darker than I liked..

So I used another Q-tip to apply the blue magic metal polish to the areas and used the dremel and polishing pads to buff them out .. several times until I acheived what I have here..

Hope this helps..
There are other ways of doing this Like masking or making a stripe template and bead or sand blasting the coating off.. If I had access to this method I would have done that instead.. leaving a non glare finish.. but this works for me..

Take Care

jefff, I think that is "COOL AS HELL!" Placing order........now! :D

also, I don't think that would look as good with the black handles, IMHO.

Hey guys just wanted to update a little bit on this things cutting ability .. and have a few picture.. we took our daughter to the park today and I decided to see how the knife would fair from a possible attack from a low hanging tree branch ;)
here are the pics..
she held her edge very well even after hacking though this branch and whittling it too bits.. I still have yet to touch the edge up with the diamond steel even after this abuse..

I am very impressed with the edge retention of this so called lesser steel used on this knife.. and the finish is outstanding for the price

I took the dremel to the scales and now it is really comfy in the hand.. This is now My knife lol..

jefff,
Have you got a photo that shows how the knife fits in your hand? How does it ride in your pocket?

Just took some snaps for ya.. The way the handle is designed, it fits perfect into the hand..

And it rides in the pocket clipped with enough of the end sticking out to get a hold of.. but the added paracord FOB makes it alot easier and looks cool too..

Thanks jefff, that's what I was looking for. I'm going to give this one a shot..............SK

jefff,
Just wanted to let you know that I went ahead and picked up an all black version of this knife (Island Security Store) and am also very pleased. This will probably end up being my new work knife (or at the very least, in the rotation!). A lot of knife for the handful of dollars I paid and I can't find anything I really dislike about it.

Small things like the so-so black oxide finish on the blade I can live with. The actual grind lines are very good and the lock up is plenty solid with the liner about half way or so on the blade tang. Fine by me. As for the liner thickness or any possible issues thereof, it's right on par with other liner-locks I own and I think if Buck were to go much heavier, the overall width of the handle would start to really come into play as far as carrying comfort goes with only marginal gains in strength. Right now it's about perfect for me. There was a sharp bur along the outside edge of the liners that I smoothed down a little with the tip of an EZ-lap diamond rod. That was about a minute's worth of work.

The handle is much less blocky than I thought it would be and the TACCOM scales I really like--nice and grippy, but not overly so. The knife balances right at the finger groove and does so really well. It's also much more comfortable than I figured it would be. Really not a bad design and I like this blade shape.

Overall, this is a pretty rugged folder with a practical blade. This knife falls more along the lines of a heavy duty folder, but it should carry nicely for it's size and weight--which aren't bad.

jefff, thanks for the review help. SK

 Cool man .. I'm glad I could be of some help in your purchase. And thank you for adding more to this review..

Jefff, wanted to say thank you. I have been wanting one of these for awhile, but I just wasn't sure it was worth it. Now after seeing yours and what you can do to it I must have one. Awesome review and skills! Buck should take a look at yours and make a new model from it

Hey man thank you that is one heck of a complement! I know what ya mean I wanted one also and no one around here carries them.. So I thought I could at least take as many pics of it so others could see what they were really getting with out holding it.. It is a heck of a nice lower priced knife
