quick word for fat wood

Ya I'm sure he's watching that and slapping his head.... doh!.... he seemed really nervous but compitent enough to know the difference.

In Mississippi, we dont call it fatwood, we call it Lighterd or a lighterd knot. I get them all of the time for my dad so he can start fires in his wood heater.

Target also sells it 4lbs for 10 dollars. The tag said it was imported from Honduras.

The best fatwood comes from Central America, usually sold as 'Maya Sticks', or 'Maya Dust'. A different species of Pine down there that can contain better than 80% resin.

A bit more expensive, but you don't need much. I use it only for my firesteels. Get a smallish chunk, drill a hole through it and keep attached to the firesteel. Light My Fire used to include some with a firesteel order, not sure about now.

Like I said, just for my firesteels. For ordinary (non emergency) fire starting, there is an abundance of pine here in the Upstate of SC and plenty of fatwood.

It WILL work with a firesteel, but with the lower resin content, it is more of an effort.

Google Maya Sticks or, Light My Fire.

i wonder what the highly refined wax is, and if we could make ower own..
buy thet way it looks like they are lighting fat wood sticks.. how is it fair to compare a stick to dust in a ignition test????????

Their test seems fair to me. They compared sticks to sticks as the dust was in a compressed state. If they pounded each down to dust and ran it again I'd be happy with that too.

Dunno about the wax. I suspect not paraffin, perhaps soy.
