Quillon Dagger WIP

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all of the compliments. I'm kind of surprised to see this thread come up again. It's been a while since it was originally posted.

Mike,
I have tried anti-scale from Advanced Technical Products as well as a product called Vitragard. What I have had an issue with is minor pitting of the steel. Yet, the steel was in a lot better shape than it would have been with no protection. However, I DO NOT want to speak badly about these two products. I have not used either of them extensively and the issues could have been because of my technique and perhaps improper use of them. I have also used Satanite with decent results. At least, no more pitting than the two anti-scale compounds.
I have heard that Bruce Bump uses PBC anti-scale. He told me that it works well for him.
I just decided to put argon injection on my kiln to avoid having to use anti-scale compounds. Argon injection can have mixed results too. A lot depends on your injection unit installation, variables in your kiln and having the flow rate adjusted properly.

Thanks for making the time, Steve.

I guess the way I use ATP works regardless of pitting (or not)... I do a lot of final finishing after HT, so work through any surface pitting. I've thought about not using it and soaking off the scale in Sodium Bisulphate instead. I believe I might have a more uneven surface to deal with that way, though... should try both ways at the same time sometime and find out.

Mike

Thanks for the appreciation! :)

I find it interesting that this old thread gets dredged up from time to time. I've been told that portions of it have been used as a "how to" for a few Mastersmith daggers. I am honored that there are folks who view it as valuable information.

I love catching a wip at the end because there is no waiting anticipation. This dagger is awesome! And so is your shop!
