Quillon Dagger WIP

Whew! thats an expensive grip. with the high price of gold and the high price of ivory I would say this is about a $600+ handle just for materials. This kind of work is not for the faint of heart.

So true!!!

I blued the fittings today. If all looks good with them tomorrow, I will start the final assembly of the dagger.

The fittings get a final buffing with Brownell's 555 polish.

The fittings are cleaned with acetone and placed on stands to hold them off of the bottom of the bluing tank.

They are taking color just five minutes after going into the bluing tank. I'll leave them in the tank for 30 minutes.

After removing them from the bluing tank, they are rinsed in clean water to remove the bluing chemicals and blown dry with compressed air. Then, they are put into a container with water displacing oil. They will remain in the oil overnight.

It's almost unbearable to look at a photo of you spinning the gold wire, Mr. Culver - I don't think I could stomach the idea of breaking that by mistake!

Steve that handle looks great. The gold and ivory really set each other off. I can safely say that the customer is going to be thrilled with this one. Plus a great WIP thread for all future MS candidates. You are the man.

LOL!!! :) Honestly, twisting the gold wire didn't scare me any more than about a hundred other things that I had to do during the process of building this knife. I spend a lot of time working scared.......... You are always afraid that the buffer will rip a piece from your hand, you'll slip while grinding or filing and ruin something, or you'll just have a clumsy moment and drop a finished piece on the floor. There's a thousand ways to have a disaster.

I did the final assembly of the dagger today. Last clean-up of the knife and photos tomorrow.

The dagger is finished. Here's a quick and dirty photo of it, to announce that it is done. I'll work on a final image of the piece and post it later.

I luv it Steve! Inspiring stuff.
Thanks for taking the time to share some processes that we don't see much of on the net like fluting with wire inserts as well as guard layout/shaping just to name a few.
I am working on a guard right now and it made me realize that when it comes to carving/shaping metal, precise layout is essential. Winging it just doesn't cut it.

Thanks again.

Spectacular!!! Makes me want to collect daggers!!! Thanks for letting us inside the process-amazing!!!

such an elegant knife, and a great thread too.

A fantastic, beautiful piece and a wonderful WIP, very well done Steve and thank you so much for posting smaller pictures, usually I can't follow these threads because my dial-up connection takes forever to load but with the smaller pics everything loaded rather quickly.:thumbup:

Wow. Totally a piece of jewelery. You are the 'knifemaker'.

You wouldn't happen to have a picture of the first knife you made? Just curious to see how you started out.

Absolutely outstanding Steve! Priceless info in this WIP and the finished dagger is just a knockout! Exceptional work from start to finish man!

Great job on both the WIP and the blade Steve. Some lucky customer is going to be VERY happy. It must give you great satisfaction to know that something you have made will be passed from generation to generation as a family heirloom!

Thank you for letting us be "witness" to your work. The best WIP I have ever seen and the one to be followed.

Thanks to all for the compliments. I glad to hear that many of you got some information on building this type of knife from the WIP. Here's another image of the dagger that is a little better. I've got a lot of shots of the piece and need to spend some hours putting together a really nice image. But for now, I need to get to work on my next project!

Thanks Again!!!!!
