Quintessential Spyderco Knife?

Which Spyderco would you reccomend to someone who has never owned a good knife? One that captures the 'essence' of spyderco knives. Preferably one that is relatively tame looking (not as "strange" as a lava) so it is easy to fall in love with. The only real requirement is that it is around 3" to serve as an EDC blade. Price does not matter, its for my father-in-law's birthday. lol. I want him to fall in love with not just knives, but Spyderco knives.

full flat ground delica? maybe a tenacious or persistance, dragonfly2, maybe a native, ukpk would be good, but i put everything behind the delica i love that knife.

Caly 3, Delica, Sage, Native (3 1/16", though). The Paramilitary is just a tad over 3" but it would be an awesome choice as well.

Sage 1 or Sage 2 are about as "ideal" as I can think of for an EDC. Bonus is the wire clip which carries low and stealthy.

IMHO Caly3 and UKPK are best-looking knives with 3" blade and great ergos in current production. Also may consider Phoenix, I saw it very reasonably priced at KC. If the blade smaller than 3" will do the trick, than take a look at Kopas.

The Caly 3 is such a nice knife.
I gave my sister one. She doesn't like knives at all, but the first time she held it I noticed her eyebrows raise in a way I've never seen before.
She likes it.
A couple of combat hardened, self-proclaimed 'weapons psychos' she works with seemed to be deeply impressed with the Caly 3, too.

I wonder if anyone has ever been legitimately disappointed with a Caly 3.

Caly 3 was my first Spyderco back in May. Now I'm up to 32 with more on the way. :)

For me, the quintessential Spydie with a 3" or under blade would have to be the Delica. It's a proven design that is a great EDC blade.

Caly 3 or Sage 2, both are beautiful and perfect and very functional. Spyderco exemplified

Something larger the Stretch 2 in Carbon Fibre

If you want a present to impress your father, Carbon Fiber Caly 3, with laminated ZDP-189 steel...
That´s THE one !

Firstly and foremost: Any one from the Calypso family :Caly Jr, Caly 3, Caly 3.5. ( the original C54 Calypso might be a wee bit large not to mention a wee bit pricey). The Caly Jr is my personal favorite out of this bunch due to it's ultra light weight, slim profile and 2nd to none lightsaber like cutting performance.

Other than that a Delica or Sage should do the trick. I wouldn't recommend a Native as the ergos are often a hit or miss with some folk.

The delica, Caly or Caly jr if it could be located. The choice of steels, grips, grinds and blade shapes over the design life make it and the endura a knife for every purpose and preference.

In Delica's I have about 5 and prefer the ZDP versions.

If he's right handed, get him the Sage I. It epitomizes everything "Spyderco" in a good looking highly ergonomic package.

Holy crap. And I thought I was a bit crazy as I started in June 2010 and have now 16 (today I got in the mail a Blue Endura 4 and a Para 2. I have on preorder a Para 2 in cts-20cp and a Navaja...)! I see there are worse addicted people than me! Ahahaah

You and I aren't even in the "competition." There are guys over on the Spyderco forum that are far more "active." :o

My 2011 catalog is already very dog-eared with future purchases.

Thanks for the input everyone, I've narrowed it down to Delica FFG, Paramilitary, or Sage (1 or 2). I'll buy it within the next coupe of days, I'll let you guys know.

I know I'm late but I would say the quintessential Spydie is a full flat ground Delica.
