Quintessential Spyderco Knife?

I would suggest the Delica or the Endura, they have been in the line up forever, for a reason. I might also say that FRN might feel cheap to the newly initiated. I believe that G10 is probably the way to go. Certainly the FRN has its place in the world, but for someone new to knives, I would think that they would like something that felt more substantial than light.

another for the delica. it was my first spyderco and several spyders later i still feel like it best embodies spyderco even though it is by far not my "best" spyderco

Which Spyderco would you reccomend to someone who has never owned a good knife? One that captures the 'essence' of spyderco knives. Preferably one that is relatively tame looking (not as "strange" as a lava) so it is easy to fall in love with. The only real requirement is that it is around 3" to serve as an EDC blade. Price does not matter, its for my father-in-law's birthday. lol. I want him to fall in love with not just knives, but Spyderco knives.

A little off topic but relevant never the less....

Make sure your father in law is worthy. I had similar thoughts about giving a Spyderco to my father in law. He had for once been uncharacteristically helpful of late and I wanted to give him something in appreciation. At the time I really wanted to customize a Mini Persian for him. However that quickly changed to a box of chocolates after he used my Gayle Bradley to open can of paint.... I should have known better:p

Can't go wrong with an ffg or sg delica if you want to drop the cash the new ti and cf models came out for the ukpk which is amazing though slip joints may not be the best for a new knife owner. Also, if you are unsure of how he will use the knife the tenacious is a great buy.

I vote endura. Edc and tactical. Plus it will only be a seed into a deeper addiction. All else will fall in line.

stretch CF for me. it packs everything i love in spyderco.

it's well built, flat, easy to carry, very good ergos, cuts like a lightsaber, holds it's edge ....

and it doesn't flash too much.

I would also highly recommend the Stretch as well. This is the knife that Sal Glesser, the founder of Spyderco, built for his own use.

However, I would recommend the plain FRN version for a first-time user. As mentioned previously, the ZDP-189 isn't for those without a good sharpener and some practice. The VG-10 on the FRN version is much easier to maintain...

If he's not a knife guy to begin with, perhaps he imagines something like a SAK when he thinks of pocket knives. The wide Spyderco blade can make even a small knife seem a whole lot bigger, imho. Maybe a smaller model would be more appropriate to 'ease him into' the idea of a Spyderco? Something like a Dragonfly 2 perhaps?

If he's already comfortable with larger blades, I'll echo what a lot of people have said already: the sabre-ground Delica is *the* quintessential Spyderco. A fantastic knife in all respects. If your father-in-law enjoys boating or fishing, maybe consider the Salt 1 which is similar in size and shape, but the H1 steel would be a big bonus.

If your father-in-law is more of a city-slicker, corporate executive, business type chap, I can't imagine him not liking any model with carbon fibre. The Terzuola is one helluva sporty knife!

I'm sure he'll appreciate whatever you choose for him. Good luck! :)

I'd say the quintessential spydie varies by size preference, from delica, to endura, to Military.

Yes lots of people find others better, but when I think Spyderco those three pop out as their flagship workhorses.

I would say the quintessential Spyderco will be either the Endura or the Delica.

The Flagships will be the Military and Paramilitary.

Hey guys, thanks to all who chimed in, I finally decided: a Delica FFG in foliage green g10. Just placed my order ten minutes ago. Thanks again!
