The other day I was walking on one of my trails on my land ( not far from my house 100 or 200 Yards) my dogs were with me (two 100 pound choc. labs)
and I see a racoon. my dogs are not paying attention and did not see it at first.
they are nocturnal animals so I was shocked to see one at 2pm. If it would have run off I would not have thought anything of it.
I started yelling and hollering trying to scare it away before my dogs starting chasing it.It kept coming toward me ,closer and closer then the dogs took off after if . It started to snap and growl at the dogs so i took off to my house. I grabbed my ruger p95 9mm and loaded 5 in the mag, I thought that should do it. I ran back hoping that it didn't bite one of the dogs
I found it and shot it five times and it still was walking around ! By this time my brother heard the gunshots and grabbed a rifle.he showed up and saw what was going. The racoon was sitting there ripping out fur ,oblivious to me and everything thats going on. my brother shot in two or three times and it was still going and coming toward us!!! he fired several more shots before it stopped it crazy ass charge. when we were sure it was dead we looked it over and it had been hit in the head 5 or 6 times, the head was almost gone .
I had heard stories about rabid animals but damn!
what causes an animal to get rabies and how is it spread( I know bites but what other ways?)

wow.. that's wild... you gotta watch out for those guys... i have heard a few stories similar to that as well... glad none of you folks were injured...

we have a big fig tree in my backyard and they go nuts, when the figs are in season(now)... they'll be 5-6 fighting in the tree... it drives my dog crazy, which in turn wakes my wife and i up...

its true in the time that i spent coon hunting in the ozarks of Missouri i learned that anytime you see coon in the daylight there is something wrong with it. i was taught to destroy it and leave it. never take the hide.

LoneWolf, we used a brindle Cur that would sit on the tool box of the truck going back and forth as we drove up and down the back roads. when he smelled something he would bark once and we would turn off the truck and he was out on search. we would sit until we heard him bark that he was on track. it is amazing but after a while you can tell the sound of being on track and then being treed. alot of good memories in those woods at night.

The rabies is in the saliva and as it licks it's fur the fur is contaminated. Don't touch. Kill it, burn or bury it !

Racoons can be very tough. I had one for a pet until the fucker bit me:eek:
Very smart but the males can get nasty when the hormones start acting up.

I shot one in our driveway a few years ago and called the county health department. They told me because it was moving very slowly and non-aggressive it probably had distemper. I picked it up with a shovel and burned it. You can never be too careful!!

[QUOTE (Yeah, I forgot, the distemper makes them act drunk)[/QUOTE]

I've never heard of a rabid animal actually charging someone but I believe ya. Here in rural Wisconsin about 7-yrs-ago we had a huge outbreak of canine distemper amonst the Raccoons. We had two sick coons in the yard in the middle of the day (different days) just laying there. Shot one with .22 --a single head shot did the trick.

The other coon my dog saw and I didn't have a gun on me. It slowly started to walk for the cornfield that borders my acreage and my dog intercepted it. He dispatched it quickly. It was so sick it had only a minimum fight left in it. Burned it (coon not my dog). My dog of course had all his vacinations. He was a 90-lb Pit Bull/Doberman. He was a great gentle giant and friend.

Arguing with a Biker is like wrestling with a pig.
Pretty soon you realize the pig enjoys it.

On another forum there were interesting descriptions of killing lions with rabies !! This from a PH who was the one they called to deal with the problems. They had to be shot again and again and again !!!

Good that no one got hurt  I see raccoons in Riverside and Central Park here in the city on a regular basis. They eat well here, I've seen some that are so fat they have a hard time climbing a tree  My dog has been trained not to chase them but after your story I really hope I never encounter a rabid one. Anyone know what their top running speed is :D

I encountered a rabid deer in a park upstate. It just kept charging me and my dogs. It jumped over my dog once and caught its hind hoof under his belly and lifted him up threw him down hard on his side. After about the fourth charge I picked up a large log and whacked it on the back hard and it finally ran off. That was pretty freaky, never been attacked by a deer before :o

Welcome to the forums. Glad you and the dogs are ok. Btw, what rifle was your brother using?
