Racism run amuck ?

According to my 1935 F&W dictionary it can be spelled amock, amok, amoke, amuck, all come from the Malay language amoq meaning to engage in battle furiously. ...Similar to berserk !!

I've been to some American-Chinese restaurants where they didn't even give me chopsticks.

Also in some Chinese restaurants, they will give you a different menu if you speak Chinese. Generally it will have more authentic Chinese food on it than what you get in your Americanized Chinese restaurant. Imagine if the caller knew about this practice. RACISM!!! Usually it accurately reflects the tastes of the customers.

I have been to some authentic Chinese restaurants, not surprisingly in the Chinatown area. They will give you forks. Is it racist to use them if they're offering them to you? Of course not.

And on a personal level, because I'm Irish I feel discriminated against when I am not offered beer and whiskey at every meal. RACISM!!!! :D

The caller to this radio show has obviously never been around the people of Asian decent that I have. They would never even consider such a foolish notion as equating a fork to a racist slur. Of course they are also to busy working, paying taxes, and generaly contributing to society as well. What a nice concept.

You racing bastids, have ALL made amuckery of this thread.....and it has gone to the dogs....

OK, someone's been smoking too much crack. Since when can a person's choice of eating utensils be considered racist? Neither my Asian self nor my Asian friends have ever heard of this "slur" -- hell, I certainly never got the memo. I've never gotten a good explanation of why I'm supposed to be offended by the term "Oriental" either, though, so I may just be out of the loop. :p

Me too! Well... I'm actually not Irish at all, but I'd be crazy not to jump on this bandwagon. RACISM!!! :D

Well, you know Anglo-Saxon spelling wasn't too bad until after the Norman invasion, when they ended up spelling like the French. :D

It might interest you to know that the term "oriental" is now considered a racist slur by "asians"living in America.

I guess I just used a racist slur by not referring to them as Asian-Americans, but I don't believe in hyphenated Americans.

It's only a slur if it's used to describe people. Food can still be "oriental" - people are "Asian".

Of course if the restaurant cooks asian people it would indeed be a slur if they called themselves an "oriental" restaurant.

They could call themeselves a "cannibal" restaurant - if the Pygmy-Americans didn't object, that is.

Someone is making a mock of others.

I have been to real Chinese restaurants (in Red China in 1972) and they did not even have forks (though they probably have now), the bad thing was that they did not have tortillas.

If they cook food from Asia, it would be an oriental restaurant.
If they cook food from France, it would be an occidental restaurant.
If they serve a potluck dinner at the Senior Sitizen Senter, it would be an accidental restaurant.

If someone decides the standard ethnic designation, for whatever he thinks he is, is insufficiently grandiose, he makes up a new name, and everyone has to use it, or he's insulted.

I like having hyphenated-Americans but lets not act like it's the law. I'm a New York-American! Like Muhammad Ali said, 'I don't have to be who you want me to be. I can be who I want to be.' :D

I thought that you were a New Jersey American. I guess you can take the Esav out of New York, but not the New York out of Esav. :)
