Raden's Shooting Class

Did anyone check out the specs on that cartridge? Some of the loads fire a 750 gr. bullet at about 2400 fps. The .50 BMG fires a 750 gr. bullet at about 2600 fps.

Assuming that the rifle weighs about 15 pounds, I calculated the recoil to be about 130 foot pound. A .458 Winchester shooting a 500 gr. bullet at 2200 fps out of a 12 pound rifle generates about 56 foot pounds of recoil.

There are some of the old black powder elephant guns that generate much more recoil. I read about a gunsmith who is making 8 and 4 bore rifles. They generate in excess of 240 foot pounds of recoil. That's more then the muzzle energy of some .38 special loads.

Who chambers a hand gun in that round?

.

You mean something like this:

:D:thumbup:

Unfortunately it isn't mine. :(

edited to add: this is the same pistol shot in the last video posted by norcalblacktail. Of interest, the owner also has a similar pistol chambered in .50-140 Sharps!

I have photos of both in wallpaper size if you want them. :D

I have not shot one but I remember Hogwash telling me that he has a BFR Revolver in 475Linebaugh.:eek:

Call me a wuss but a 454 Casull is more than enough for me. If the animal does not go down with a well place 454 loaded with a 320-340gr WFN Hardcast bullet then I have no business shooting at it in the first place :D

Those 460 and 500 Smith and Wesson are just monster guns. Luckily they are equipped with muzzle brakes or else the recoil would be horrendous. A friend of mine tells me that they are not as bad as the 454 because of the muzzle brake.

I totally agree with ya :p either of the smith guns would probably stop a charging grizzly dead in it's tracks if you hit it anywhere in the torso  or nearly so from what I can imagine. The muzzle breaks definitely soften the blow as you say...shooting .45 Colts was like shooting a pellet gun. The 454 I shot before was the Ruger Blackhawk I'm pretty sure. It was a bear! I think the 500 magnum was a little heavier on the recoil, but the 460 was probably a little less :) don't quote me on it though....I shot a lot of guns the day I shot the smiths and the ruger was a while ago. They're all tremendous!

I like the versatility of the 460 though since you can shoot the .45/454/460 all out of the same gun...I've seen varous barrel legnths from smith, I've seen a freedom arms, and I've seen the magnum research. I'd be really interested in shooting that 30 though :D that thing looks awesome!

A real ball buster was the airlite smith in 44 mag. Thing has a 4'' or 5'' barrel and weighs around 26 ounces I seem to recall. It's a beast. I want a .44 but I'm stuck (eventually) between the Ruger Redhawk 5.5'', the Smith Dirty Harry, the 629 PC Smith, and the Airlite Smith. I've been playing around with some different hand loads I was given for my 686 and you can get some decent power out of a .357 too. I just got a couple boxes of some HOT Federal factory loads that I'm going to shoot later today

A multi-caliber wheel gun is surely cool. That is why I love my Smith 610. I had the chambers reamed out to 10mm Mag. Using moonclips it can now shoot 10mm Mag, 10mm, and 40sw.

Yep any of those airlite in 357 on up are all pretty hefty in the recoil department. It is the super sharp recoil impulse that make them very hard to shoot accurately.

I would like to see a sabot round for the T Rex, maybe use a .338 bullet to start with then go from there. Would be very interested to see what muzzle velocity that could achieve.

I fired a couple of different sabots through the Barrett .50 and they could penetrate massive amounts of brick, steel and wood. I suppose if all you want to do is deliver massive kinetic energy to stop a charging beast then this might not be ideal, as the round would probably pass right through.

Shooting slugs one handed?

It was a two handed grip, left on the slide, right on the pistol grip at about chest height, tight (but not tight enough) to my chest. I was standing on a dock pointing in the general direction of a coffee can I had thrown out on the frozen lake, so I was aiming below me which I guess put the shotgun at just the right angle. I learned my lesson pretty quick!

I don't plan on going to Africa but my wimpy short action 7mm-08 will stop anything in this country. My .243 is my fav for the smallish deer we have around here, shot at least 20 in my life with one and never had one go more than a few feet.

It's all about the bullet placement. People tend to use way to much gun, which most won't shoot as well as a lighter caliber.

I tell my friends with the 7mm mags and such that they must be trying to compensate for something(lack of something):D

Great vids Skunk!

Goodness, those are insane!

If the hogs around here get big enough that a 45-70 won't stop them, I think I'll just have to retire from hunting :foot: I'd like to still have a shoulder when I turn 40...

Chambered in a modern gun I don't think there is any game in the World that the 45-70 can't take. I remember reading article about a fella who hunted the Big 7 of Africa using a Marlin 45-70 and Garrett's 540gr Super HardCast Hammerheads.

My Tikka .243 Winchester is my most used rifle. It is a great all arounder for me because it makes a great varmint rifle and double duties as a small-medium game rifle. I just bust out the 444 Marlin if I need more firepower.

I fully agree about shot placement!
