So i have been restoring an old rusty ontario machete my kids found and it was 100+ degrees today in my shop. So i got the mail this morning and there was a package from Kershawguy in the mail box. I ordered a ram blem to use and abuse since i had never owned one and always liked it. I decided since it was so hot outside to work in the cool basement on my new ram! this is what i have done so far.

I removed the g10 scales and sanded them down. They were too grippy for me and i had seen it done before somewhere around here!

I also sanded down the clip and darkened/flamed it with a torch! Got a nice purple and gunmetal hue!

I took the stop bar and the hex piece of the pivot and flamed them too

My question now is i would like to finish it off by flaming the three thumbstuds. How well does the dlc stand up to extreme heat/ torch flame? I would assume it would be just fine with no discoloration. Anyone have any experience with this and or anybody want to be a guinea pig and try it for me! Thanks in advance!

It depends on the type of DLC that they used. I believe that TiN is rated for about 600 C.

Of course I would not put any heat to the blade itself as you risk ruining the heat treat.

What he said... very little heat will change your heat treat and potentially ruin the blade. If you absolutely feel you must then either try to remove the studs, (likely very tough) or keep the rest of the blade in an ice water bath. That may help to protect the blade edge at least.

Good work! I'm going to do the same heat treat on mine today! Thanks for the idea! :P

Yeah i was thinking about the heat treat. The ice water is a good idea. I thought about pressing them out but i'm not sure what i have a press to take them out or put them in. I figured the blade itself would be a huge heat sink and make it hard to do. I might try to press them out. I'll post it up with what i decide to do.

Here's mine! I didn't want the purple/blue effect since it wouldn't fit the style of my RAM. Looks great on yours!

I'm quite happy with the result, it makes it look even more like an old Desert Storm tank now :p

It really does look like a battle hardened tank! I like the look of a good user! Good job!

I used a punch slightly larger then the studs to punch them flush, then a smaller one to get them all the way out.
The reason I took them out was I don't use them. Putting them back in shouldn't be to much of a PITA...But then
again, I haven't tried. :D

Here's one of mine:

I think yours is the one i was talking about giving me the idea for the g10. i don't have any punches that small. I did however get them off to the side with the help of a vise and a 1/2 socket! i'll post the pictures in a bit.

I did the same thing to the G10 on mine (also inspired by svrider). I like it a lot better now.

I tried to flame them but to no avail. I tried the ice water and it worked well to keep the blade parts that were under icy cool. The Dlc gets lighter in color when it is heated. I rubbed some oil on after the attempt. I worked it around and wiped it off and it seems to be pretty much gone with a slight hint of where it was but barely. So for anyone else wanting to know there you go. i might try to make a punch tomorrow to try and remove them. i have'nt made up my mind yet. I also flamed all the screws that were black. They turned a cool gray color.

side note: you can atually use the three studs as thumb studs now!

At the risk of sounding like a simpleton, how exactly did you get the aluminum to this color?
I like the look and would want to try this with one of my RAMS.

Looks to me like Gunkote or something similar. I.E. paint of some sort.

Yes I just took it apart and spray painted it. The paint comes off the edges and corners but I love the look it gives the knife!

^^^
Are we talking hardware store grade spray paint here just to see how it looks, or did you go the Cerakote/Duracoat (sp?) route?
