Randall Made users

Mike, you right about the 25. It's best as a hunting knife. I rarely use it much anymore. I use another makers knives more now. :D

Scott - I really appreciate you starting this thread.

Have been trying to find out info about the Randalls - was seriously considering a model 5 or 22.

Unless I order direct from Randall, it is my understanding from some posts I read over at the Randall Society that the warranty is void if I bought it second hand - which is a real bummer.

Also have a concern (and may be unfounded) that I could not use it to consistently baton when making kindling due to how the handle is molded around the tang etc without running risk of causing issues over time.

Since if I bought it, it would be second hand thus voiding the warranty - not sure I can risk it.

Does any one have any thoughts on those concerns?

Yeah I know it is insane to many to use a knife for chores like that , or consider doing that to a Randall - but I guess that verifies I'm bonkers. If I spend that much on a knife - it needs to be able to take whatever I dish out.

I have a Randall No.3 with a 5" blade and stag handle. I carried it quite a bit back in the seventies, and it shows. At this point it has a lot of sentimental value to me and I'm less inclined to take it afield if I'm just woodsbumming. If I won a moose tag, it would be the knife I'd take.

I bought a Randall #14 almost 25 years ago when I entered the Army, but could never bring myself to use it. Then as I got older I came to much prefer knives without finger grooves, so I probably won't ever use it. I guess I just keep it out of sentimental reasons.

I have several Randall Knives:
a couple of very Rare Scar copies of "one off" custom pieces from the mid 60s:

Here is a link to a couple of the Roman Short Swords I own:
The Pic with the double swords and the pic with the Model #18 type sword.

Go here: http://www.scarknives.com/

Then go to gallery, then go to SCAR MUSEUM (Rare Randall Knives)

The Roman Short Swords blades were 11" long 2.75" wide.

Enjoy. The Stainless Steel Roman Short Sword with the tubular handle is not so short 13" long blade.

I prefer to use full tang knives for hard use. My 25 is at best a hunting knife. The hollow grind is pretty thin. The grind and stick tang makes me leary to beat on it.

Nice one. I really like the handles on those mod. 25's.

I did not use my Randalls yet - because I'm still waiting for them:(. I've got a model 1 and a model 2 on the way. Due to legal restrictions I'll probably never use them:mad:.

Have had a 1-7, 2-8 , 18-71/2 and a 24 used all but the 2 as it is a very specific use knife , the 24 could be classed as specific use like the 2 but I used it for peeling apples for lunch. Still have a 10-3 and a 14 use both , have a 1 and a 2 on order for 2009 and 2010. Will use the 1 but the 2 I don't foresee using , but if needed it would no doubt be up to the task. Guess You would have to see handle a 2 but the symmetry of thy double edge is beautiful , dare I say almost sexy. Used the 10-3 to gut the deer this year , used the 1 to dress last deer before I sold the 1. Hated to sell but needed truck parts , the beauty of it was even used and sharpened I made money on all the Randalls I sold. Wish My last house had held value like that.

Thanks Mike. keep an eye out in the Backwoodsman magazine. Dan Shechtman may be writing an article about that knife.

The Sportsman's Bowie goes back to 1968, the Model 14 the late 70's and the 6" #1 is from the 80's. The first two have been everywhere.

Scott I know this is not in keeping with your origional post...sorry...but do you think that when you have time you could post a thread about the different knives you have made and your thoughts and experiences through using them, this would of course require loads of nice pics !;)

I'm sure I'm not alone with wishing to see such a post !!!!:D:thumbup:

pitdog, I could do that on my forum. I'd have to collect my thoughts on that. Alot of my testing is done on my property but I have done quite a bit on the different trips i've gone on. Those were nice because I could hand knives to others to try out.

This is my other Randall. Model 15. I haven't really done much with it. It's more of a fighter then an outdoor knife.

Here are a couple I use to use alot in the 60's-70's.....still got them but rarely
use them anymore.

I don't blame you for not using your #16 anymore. That thing is worth lots of money. Beautiful knife!

I carried my Model 14 Attack for over 12 years in the Army. I retired her from active service, when I wrapped up service. Too many memories wrapped up in her to risk damage or loss now. It's officially an heirloom.

Thats a awesome pics of randall. Did you blue the blades

I blued them many years ago with some "bottle stuff" I bought at a gunstore. Crude but effective. Used N-Mu on the brass.

I owned and used, at various times during my career in Special Operations (21+ years), a Randall Model 1-6 with black micarta handle and a Model 14 & Model 14CDT. All now reside in the collections of three different collectors of militaria (2 in the States, 1 in the U.K.). I used all three hard and often...and they all stood up to the test! Wish I still had the 14CDT. Randall's are GREAT "hard-use" knives!
