Interesting, Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist ... may I ask a related question:

I have the below on an almost new knife from another maker. 0.25" at the spine, AEB-L. Used maybe 5 times to make fire starters / baton-split logs, mostly pine. Only wood, no nails etc., but certainly went through a few knots.

that's 1/4" thick knife?! I would certainly be displeased😑

I couldn't speculate.
 
Do you recall what put in the bigger wrinkle closer to the handle?
yes, I remember exactly how it all went down. Little tiny, quite old, light starved fir. Sometimes the little ones are very old but don't grow fast due to lack of light, they're very dense and very springy- returning all the energy you put into them right back into the knife. You don't know til you see the rings, and in this case by then it was too late!
But I fixed it
