WTF?

Dead woman found in a duffle bag in Queens, NY. Dead boy found stuffed in an carry-on bag abandoned in the woods in Indiana.
Random shootings involving multiple victims in public places reported somewhere almost daily.

WTF?
If you can believe the media (a big IF), at least the duffle bag in Queens was not random. The married vic was apparently engaged in a long term carnal relationship with the accused. Supposedly she broke it off with him, and when her husband left town (allegedly) the accused broke a kitchen knife off in her 50-60 times. The knife jokes practically write themselves, but in the interest of maintaining a fig leaf of personal decency, I shall refrain. In any event, I think these sorts of crimes of passion go back to Cain and Abel. Hard to make too much of it.

I think that 90% of the perception of modern times being crazier and more dangerous and justifying special precautions is about our perception rather than reality. Things aren't that weird. Well they are, but not any weirder than they have been. A lot of our perception is based around media that desperately needs clicks. Don't believe the hype.

I agree with this, except I think it’s actually because everybody is carrying around a camera/video camera, so more crazy behavior is being captured and then pushed by the media.

There were plenty of murders in my old neighborhoods growing up. One right next door in apartment 1D...when we lived in 1C.
Yeah, the good old days were full of mayhem.

But now's what we got to deal with.

That's one aspect of it. I think many of us (me definitely included) are kind of glad that cellphones with cameras/videocameras weren't around to catch all the dumb/embarrassing crap we got up to when we were younger 😂

That said though, the crime stats DO indicate that crime (and especially violent crime) declined in the 90s and 2000s, and is on the rise again (significantly spiking in the last couple of years).
