I got bitten once as a kid and I still remember it fairly well. I was probably 8-9 yrs old and 67 now.
I posted previously about taking months to fully recover after a yappy little shit nipped me in the back of the ankle while I was riding my bicycle, and the bite ended up getting infected. I think I was ~13 - 14 at the time.
Ever since then, whenever a dog came running towards me while out biking, unless I had enough of a lead that I was 100% sure I could outrun them, I'd dismount from the bike, keeping the bike between me and the dog, while holding my (very sturdy) bike pump.
When I got older, I had the epiphany about assholes not changing their behavior for the benefit of anyone else. They only change their behavior/practices when it negatively impacts them enough.
I realized that what I was doing, wasn't changing anything (or helping other folks who might be less capable of defending themselves).
Same goes for the folks who've mentioned drawing their CCW on charging dogs. The problem is that if you have to shoot the dog, you now have to deal with the consequences including justifying your actions to LE (SSS notwithstanding). If you escape the encounter WITHOUT shooting the dog, there is no incentive for the asshole owner to do anything different.
Anyone else who regularly rode a bicycle around as a kid, probably has memori3s of an asshole dog in the neighborhood that would chase you if you happened to go down a particular street, and you either ended up avoiding the street altogether, or pedaled really fast to get a running start to zoom past.
As mentioned in my other post, it's much better to carry pepper spray and blast any and all charging mutts. When the owners have to deal with their peppery dogs (especially if they have to deal with it repeatedly), they'll be encouraged to not let them roam free.
