It has been less than 24 hours. I just had my post op follow up and eyething s going well. Flaps are where they should be, no infection, and my vision is 20/20. Inflammation and a little swelling ,redness, normal things post eye surgery so my vision should continue to get more clear as time goes on.
The procedure is *supposed* to take like 10 mins. It took about 45 mins with me. Theres this whole thing innate in a human where when your eyes are getting pushed in, you kinda of tense up and try to escape, which is what I did in terms of shutting my other eye, and tensing. Doc had to suction and press my left eye( all normal parts of the procedure) like 4 times. Several applications of the numbing drops were needed as the eye lid speculum hurt going in and coming out. Trying to force one's eye shut against metal equals losses on all fronts. So my eye lids were pouffy.
They give you a Valium pre-procedure and it def helped, but the sense of pressure, and temporary loss of vision is wild.
Last night was rough. Thankfully my wife is at least 45% angel and took care of our son, and me as I curled up and cried* myself to sleep.
I'll being eye drops for about a month and wearing some safety glasses at work/home and goggles for sleep for the next week. But so far so good.
*crying not because of an emotional experience, just a physical response to the situation e.g., pressure, inflammation, etc.
I spent a lot of time thinking about my patients who under go elective surgery for say a rotator cuff repair then come in a few days later to see me and how they describe how painful it is. I suppose it waqs similar in being more painful than they expected (or maybe they weren't told at all).
My surgeon was awesome, very professional. I would def recommend him to others.
