Random Thought Thread

Out of curiosity, how well would a rare earth magnet work for picking up all the little chips and bits of metal in that goop (since I'd assume most, if not all of it is steel)?

Could even try something like fashioning a thin plastic/Kydex sleeve to go over the magnet to make it much easier to clean/remove the filings/chips (i.e., the chips and filings won't contact the magnet directly, where they might be near impossible to remove. When you want to clean it, you slide the sleeve off the magnet. All the caught material falls/wipes off the plastic easily).
the chips I was rooting through yesterday were titanium.

otherwise yeah that would probably work for the most part

Random thought:

So now we have a 'CPK and Wine', and a 'CPKs and Whine' (After Sale Lounge) threads, where folks talk about CPKs and drinking
🤣

not to mention CPKs and Beer, CPKs and Whiskey... Hmmm... I'm seeing a trend here...

I am eagerly awaiting the inevitable thread, sooner or later, bannered: CPK and the obscene display of one's wealth! Something really blingy likes this 🤣

Sometimes, after mucking a sump, there's a smell that permeates your soul.

It smells like regret and despair

You didn't muck the sump because it would be fun. You didn't muck the sump because it was just that time of year and a good time to do it. You mucked the sump because there was something wrong with it.

It had sump livers floating in it. Midway between the bottom and the top.

Not quite solid enough to grab, but more than solid enough to clog up us a pump. Hidden just under the surface. With a dusty oil content that cannot be washed off with even strong soap. The best you can do is just rub it off as best you can.

Sometimes that sump is 5 years old. And all the little fines that can work their way through the chip conveyor are waiting at the bottom of it to prick you through your glove

The glove that has filled full of coolant and sadness.

And you're always aware, in the back of your mind, that this could be the time that some fungus and some form of tetanus will cross and make the monkey pox Ebola that ends society. The only cure for it will be MRSA. And you will be patient zero. And it will come from this sump.
Maybe call Mike Rowe!
Grinding, dangerous machines, sharp things…right up his alley!

I don’t know diddly squat about machining, but do these machines have some sort of removable catch basket similar to a deep fryer or is the cutting oil sludge to thick to use something like that?
the big chips and solids are removed daily. the smaller stuff that slips through the screen are what get everywhere and under everything

Drizzt Do'Urden!

Funny story. I met R.A. Salvatore at a book signing for The Legacy in high school. I think a total of 5 people (including my brother and I) showed up, so I was able to talk to him for quite a bit. Obviously, I asked him how to pronounce Drizzt (Drits) and Guenhwyvar (like Guinevere with a -var).
That’s awesome. Love his books. Pretty sure I have most of them … and pretty much the whole of my high school library’s sci-fi/fantasy, much to my wife’s dismay. Much easier to store electronic copies but nowhere near as fun when your actually turning pages.

New Nirvana song? Kurt, is that you?

My truck has the 7.3 direct injection turbo diesel.

In stock form, maybe 250 horsepower if I'm lucky. Probably less.

So I had oversized injectors and a chip installed and I've got maybe 350 horsepower now. Not fast by modern standards. But it moves okay.

I was flogging the shit out of the old girl coming back from Ohio overall those mountains with that machining center. Pretty close to 22,000 lb on the road.

Pretty sure I burned a valve

Is it making noise or just blowing more smoke?
My friends old 7.3 was ticking more than usual and blowing a bit of gray until he swapped the CDR valve and tightened the injectors and rockers.

We made it through another week!

I know some of my friends here are dealing with different things and I hope positivity comes from it

It's never easy but always worth it

Have a great weekend all you crazy roosters
