Man, I've been tempted to make it to my first ever Blade Show this year as it'd be a ton of fun, but this talk of Black Friday type crowds when the doors open invokes images of out-of-control mobs shoving you out of the way to satisfy their greed and selfishness at the expense of human decency and respectability.

Hopefully that's just my mind exaggerating the reality of it.

Those who've gone, is it at all like this or is it much more civilized, even when everyone's overly excited at the initial open?

Depends on what you are going there for. If it's for a limited or custom piece, there is no avoiding the line and the crowds- you have to get there early. If it's more of a " I want to meet the CPK crew( great folks)/other makers, pick some nice knives" kind of deal, go there after 12 on Friday or after 10 on Saturday/Sunday.
If anyone is into knives and if they are thinking about Blade Show Atlanta- don't let the crowds scare you away. It's not that bad at all.

Everyone should experience the Blade Show at least once.

The first several I went to alone or with friends, (Fred Perrin, Laci Szabo et al), helped Kit Carson, Jerry Halfrich and others man their tables, and then my wife started going with me for the next several years and she had as good a time as I did...hanging out with makers and their wives, browsing the show or just shopping.

It's a great time and the knives ain't bad either. If you're on the fence, go.

I’ve been several times. As Blues stated, it really should be experienced, at least once. The venue is huge and everything knife related, can be found there. It can be rather crowded and overwhelming, on a first visit, but I’ve never experienced any rude or aggressive behavior. People make way for each other.

People will often make a bee line to their favorite makers (CPK 😊), in order to see the full table (though Nate, Jo, and Mark, stock a good set of tables). I like to peruse all of the rows and isles, to see what everybody has made/brought - stopping to say hi to those that I might know, and/or look at things I might be interested in. It literally takes me about a solid day and a half to see everything. A lot of the makers and manufacturers are very friendly and more than happy to talk knives and equipment. I once had a 20 minute conversation with Sal Glesser of Spyderco fame (and no I wasn’t overstaying my welcome, it was his choice).

If the somewhat limited early bird tickets are still available, they’ll get you into the show a couple of hours early on Friday. A lot of people do buy them and some show up, literally a day early, to be at the beginning of the line. If you show up a couple of hours before they open the doors to the early birds, you’ll probably have to wait in a long line, but I think that it has been worth it. The extra two hours, in a slightly less crowded venue, is pretty fun. Hope this helps. Mike

IMO, Early Bird access is critical if you want to buy highly coveted / limited quantity knives, and even then there can be a mad lolly scramble when the doors open. And even that is not going to work for many hot makers whose knives are sometimes all gone before they even open the doors.

I agree that it is something every knife knut should experience once. But all of that is why I stopped going years ago. Too much time and money spent with nothing but disappointment to show. Hell, I can be disappointed for free right here at home every other Friday at 3 PM Eastern time. 🤣 Or every time GEC drops a new knife and they're Gone in 60 Seconds. 😂

If you don't already have early bird tickets, which are sold out, to avoid bitter disappointment maybe start planning earlier for 2024. JMHO.

Does me thinking I can replace my FK2 and DEK1 with a DEK2 make me an idiot?
What's the intended usage? I have all three and don't think my life would be altered if I only had one of them.

If you can think up a way to damage the DEK 2...make a video. (Probably could say that about all three, though.)

My DEK 2 gets the majority of carry time these days, fwiw.

I guess just all around fixed blade. I use my FK2 as a woods / hiking knife almost all just day trips screwing around in the woods. My DEK1 has become my generic outside yard work , putzing in the garage just love to have on me knife. I don’t regularly carry either. Doing this swap makes 3 people happy. My new son-in-law gets the FK2 he’s in love with, my daughter the knife nut gets the DEK1 she cant wait to inherit and I get a new knife!
With my actual usage either of my current could be a one knife solution for me but….new knife!
