Random Thought Thread

The discussion of removing prices has been done to death for years. The bottom line, and all that really matters, whether "pro" or "con", is that the owner of the site has stated that he will not impose a rule forcing folks to leave the sale price in place.

There have been many heated arguments on the topic but it won't change anything. FWIW, I like seeing what the prices paid were, but I'm in the same boat as the rest of the membership when it comes to the rules there.

Since the title of this thread is "Random Thought Thread", I thought I'd share something that has been bouncing-around in my brain for a bit, and use this opportunity to learn.

I'm fairly new here (*"FNG") and still getting used to some of the "cultural norms" of the Site. One thing that has always baffled me is taking down the asking price of a knife once it is sold in The Exchange. This "custom" seems to have carried-over to other (*smaller) knife sites. I'm on a few motorcycle/truck/etc. sites and have never seen this before.

For me, The Exchange would be a great place to kinda' judge the actual market value of a particular knife, when trying to "fairly" price a knife for sale. You could use it as a reference (*from previous sales), and as an indicator of current/fair market value. However, when the price of a knife goes from, let's say, "$350" to "SOLD", it really isn't much help.

I know that this Site has a hard-on for folks asking "How much is my knife worth?", without a paid Membership. And, I guess I get that. I reckon they don't want folks joining, ascertaining the approximate market value of a Family heirloom, and then "bouncing"...never to be seen again.

However, for the Membership, I feel like The Exchange could be a useful and helpful resource for both Sellers AND prospective Buyers. Sellers could fairly price their knives, and Buyers would reap the benefits of knives not being overpriced.

Educate me. And, feel free to flame-away. I'm used to not being a popular guy and ain't sensitive.
1) People can't read. Replacing a price with sold helps reduce "is this still available?" questions.
2) People can't MYOB. Replace a price with sold helps reduce "Well I know you paid XYZ so can you do 123?" questions or "I know you paid XYZ and you're asking $50 more, you're a flipper!" accusations.

Pro tip: subscribe to a forum and get email notifications and you'll always be able to see what something was listed for.

Bingo. 100% agree

This is an open forum. Everything posted here is everyone’s business who wants to read the information.
If you want to conduct your sales behind the prying eyes, I bet you know how to do that.
If the price is too high, don’t buy it.
Placing SOLD in the thread title solves that problem easily and saves everyone the time of even opening the thread with any thoughts of buying.
Knives or any other product that you have owned for a good while are more expensive to replace in today’s inflated world so that automatically makes them worth more than you paid.
Flipping for a large profit is bad but there are no rules in that regard. Pier pressure doesn’t work on some people. That is especially true on people you don’t actually know (on the internet) so roll your eyes, don’t bite on the sale and let them take it to another platform to gouge. You can’t stop it.
Remove the price if you like but trying to tell me that the current “market value” of my item is not relevant is incorrect.
Comps are the normal way of figuring out the price for your real estate prior to listing it for sale. Prior sale prices are relevant. Market dictates price, not what you paid.
Now for the good stuff
The manufacturer is intimately involved in this forum, very active and available “even on vacation” to answer questions or ?
There are lots of good people on here who will sell you a blade for about what they have in it and we all hope that continues to be the case.
Take a look at the past Friday sales and see the proxy’s good gestures.
Have fun, you’re not in control
Possibly my time for decaf!

As far as the "Is it still available?" questions, I would think that placing "***SOLD!***" in the thread title would do the trick, and still leave the sale price as a good indicator for others.

Alas, maybe that isn't the case.

That's what I do. When I have no knives remaining in a sale thread, I update the title to "SOLD (or ALL SOLD): KNIFE X, KNIFE Y" and format the price inside the thread to this: SOLD $123 SOLD. And then I lock the thread so no one can reply.

If someone asks me if the knife is available after that, I ignore them. If someone later on says "So-and-so paid $X for this same knife ten years ago, so will you take $X?," but I don't want to take $X, then I'll either ignore them if I think it's laughably outrageous or I'll tell them price $Y that I am willing to take.

Pretty much what I do as well. I'll just add that if I end up selling it for less than what I originally posted, I don't edit it.

Almost all of my sales over the past few years have been from someone contacting me about a knife I own...or offering me an opportunity to own one they think I may be interested in.

(Also, via my responding to a WTB thread in the Exchange.)

Can't remember the last one I posted for sale.

I give away more than I sell.
