I prefer the taste and profile of the ghost pepper. And the scorpion pepper. But actually the habanero peppers pretty dang excellent and is my go-to hot pepper. It's plenty hot enough if you get a good one. (Those translucent light orange things at the grocery store are not the good ones)

In my experience there is a lot of “heat” variance in all the hot peppers. I’ve grown jalapeños that were damn near as hot as the habaneros I grew the next year.
Ultimately, I’m going for flavor not just heat. I’ve tried scorpion and ghost peppers and deem them fine for adding heat to a recipe but I don’t think they have good flavor. Habaneros - I’ve had good and bad (weak) as far as flavor goes.
My younger son likes the spicy stuff. He used to eat a couple jalapeños during pepper pickings. One day I roasted some jalapeños on the grill to go along with some burgers. He grabbed one and took a bite before I could warn him. Tears, sweat and three glasses of milk later he was asking “how?” “Why?” was that jalapeño so hot. That’s what happens when you roast them.

Trader Joe's Smoked Ghost Chili is my go to for when I want to add a touch of heat to anything. It's like crushed red pepper flakes on steroids. Love the slightly smoke flavor and you only need a crank or two.

It's seasonal at TJ, so if you see it, stock up. I usually get a dozen or so in case I miss the summer restock.

I think for flavor my favorites are Serrano peppers and new mexico green chiles. I'm also kind of a wimp about spicy heat though.

Thai bird chilis seem to have even more variance. Once in a while you'll bite into one and it sets your mouth on fire worse than a habanero.
Yep. Quite wildly variable.

I've made a chili sauce/paste with both before, and sometimes the habanero version is hotter. Sometimes the Thai chili version is hotter.

Of the commonly available peppers in the local stores, I prefer the flavor of Serranos. I also like the flavor of the similar looking chilis from China(Szechuan?) occasionally found in Asian grocery stores. Although they aren't as hot, I really like the flavor.

As for insane heat, I wonder if one of these nuts is crazy enough to try a drop of one of the capsaicin analogs, like Resiniferatoxin (estimated equivalent of 16 BILLION Scoville HU 🥵).

Do you know the backstory on that van? I have the high version of it with two MaxAir vent fans on the top and the height is always something in my mind. No issues yet nor will I have any hopefully, but one does need to be mindful of how tall it is.
I wonder if it's from the backlog of hail damaged vehicles he mentioned a while ago?

I agree about the taste of the peppers. I think the scorpions are my favorite. And once you get to that level of heat, you certainly won’t be left wanting for more. I put some scorpion and ghosts in my smoker a couple of years ago to smoke and dehydrate and they turned out great.

Funny story...... a forklift company just purchased it, they must have some kind of multi level facility.....

Some one left a lift in neutral with no brake and it rolled off a a higher level and landed on the roof of this brand new transit

I'm dying to try some Scorpion peppers but haven't found a source for fresh ones. My typical favorites are Thai chiles; not the hottest, but a clean burn and flavor that packs a good punch in a small package. I've been so disappointed lately in serranos, habaneros and Thai chiles I've bought from grocery stores. Flavorless and barely any heat.

I planted some Thai chiles last spring from a particularly hot batch and I'm finally getting a dividend. I hope they're hot.

Anybody have a reliable source for Scorpion chiles?
