Random Thought Thread

I am officially giving up: the bulk of my knife collection was stolen in my move from Europe. I, of course, went directly to the box where I hid them as soon as I saw it unloaded. When it wasn't there, I hoped I had misremembered where I had hidden them. But now we have opened all the boxes, and there's no sign of them. My wife doesn't appreciate the loss, so I am whining to you fine people who will at least understand the pain. Gratefully, I shipped the two most important ones (my pre-production DEK1 and Yarbrough) in a travel safe and put them in a double-tagged GPS-tracked and heavily insured box... Even if the movers pay for them, several others are irreplaceable. So here's to the loss.View attachment 2386806

That really sucks, sorry. Where from in Europe ?

And similar to what E. said: I have several duplicates if you are looking for a replacement of something.

So sorry this happened to you. I'm guessing the movers will blame customs which will blame the movers in an unholy circle of suckiness.

Man that's horrible. The ease and frequency in which customs people (agents of the State) steal our stuff is just pathetic and horrible. There aren't adequate repercussions. There's not much worse than a thief.

This is the reason we put the caveat on all of our overseas shipments that we are not responsible for loss or theft. Because it is endemic and it wouldn't make sense to even ship overseas otherwise. TSA "agents" and USPS postal employees stealing from citizens should result in long jail sentences. But clearly it doesn't.
Mail theft/tampering is a Federal offense. If it's a USPS employee, the sentence should automatically be doubled. 🤬

Not even gonna start about TSA...

The box it was in probably flagged itself as too distinct. It was a large, heavy, Pelican case. I should have just tucked them throughout random boxes of kid toys/clothes/dogbeds haha
Ugh. Yeah. Thieving scum are very familiar with Pelican cases, and that they'll usually contain goodies people want to protect ☹️

*** BTW, out of curiosity; Did the Pelican case itself go missing with all the contents? Or did the Pelican case itself arrive, missing the knife collection? If the latter, was the case locked?

Especially with something like a collection of expensive knives (or anything else), distributing them throughout the boxes is actually recommended, unless you're willing to pay extra/jump through more hoops for one special box.

Stuff does get misplaced or stolen, so it's a, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" scenario. If one box gets misplaced/stolen/ransacked, you don't lose the whole collection.

The other option I know folks have used for expensive collections, is shipping them separately, with some kind of registered service (if they don't pay to have the list of items fully insured, which can get really expensive).

I realize none of this helps, in your case, but it might provide food for thought for another CPK'er down the road.

Let me simply caution against assumptions of who the guilty party or parties may be absent evidence. There are many possible conduits with access...any of which could have been exploited. It is an area with which I had a lot of previous experience in years past.

😬

Given your particular line of work, have those people with access, used said access to add contraband to some innocent party's shipments?

I'm wondering what happens if someone's household shipment inadvertently gets flagged/searched and they go, "WTF. I did NOT put that crap in there! That box WAS just my XXXXXX".

Unequivocally, yes.

Is there no recourse you can take?
At least make aware the party responsible so they know they have a thief working for them.
Is customs the responsible party?
Is it possible they just flagged it and it got held up?
This sucks.
I’m sorry.
I can put it on a lost/missing report, but they are known for telling dudes that their stuff is nearly worthless and they don't pay out. But honestly, with all the knives that are now missing there are only three that I am really butt hurt about. Two customs (one is WWII era antique) and a Swamp Rat RMD that I carried through some significant things so it's a bit sentimental.

So the Pelican DID have some extra protection due to contents not related to knives; which is why I put the eggs in one basket. I would have locked it, but US Customs doesn't allow it. The Pelican made it and the REALLY critical stuff was inside. Just not the knives.

Now I am just more invested in the BFK order I got in on haha. Ok, I am done whining about this. Thanks to all for empathizing.

Sorry, I missed responding to you. From Germany. And that's very generous, I'm up to three guys offering gifts like that--which speaks volumes to the caliber of people here. I love it that there are people who are so gregarious here. But I am content with the situation as sh***y as it is.

I have heard that many people traveling to shows with expensive knives will check a firearm with them. Because you're allowed to travel with a firearm. But then that box gets locked and gets special scrutiny. The gun is just there to have a box with the knives in it so those knives can't be stolen because that box is kept a close eye on. What a travesty that it has come to that
That's a really good idea

Oh man I still have knives to prep for the show on Sunday.
Those are awesome! Also, that's a total kick in the nuts for those of us that can't be there hahaha
I'm excited to see who wins the chop and who gets what!

What's the knife to the right of what looks like a swedged hollow ground DEK2? Is it a hollow ground UF2 with more belly near the tip?
