Random Thought Thread

The EDC just looks plain awesome, I’ve never really given it any thought until I saw a few on the exchange recently.
I love my DEK1 and carry it everyday. I came to the same conclusion as you about the FK2; just a touch too big to forget about when you're carrying it.
I recently obtained an edc1 and have been carrying it a lot. It's a different animal. The ergonomics aren't necessarily "better" than the DEK's, but they're at least as good, just in a different way.
I wouldn't use the edc for self defense though. The DEK models win there.

I also love the Dek1. It does everything I need in just the right size package. It feels awesome in the hand and I don’t worry about using it for any task I come across. It’s big enough without being uncomfortable. I need to get a pocket clip for times when I’m not wearing a belt. But from working in the woods or going to town to run errands it is my go to. I really like the Uf2 but it does have more of a presence. I’m going to get the FK3 just because CPK and I wanted to get some fancy preorder stuff. I’m sure I’ll find appropriate times for it but the DEK1 has been really good for me.

I want an EDC. Bad! I received my first CPK, a DEK thanks to ironwagon ironwagon recently. then proceeded to assault a 1.25" oak sapling with it. I was amazed how well the edge stood up without damage. I don't intend to give the DEK up, I can find multiple uses for it. But due to its size, I think an EDC would be the one that would get carried on a daily basis,

Well, I may be a contender, just because I’ve been at it for a while, and I’m rather strongly drawn to sharp, shiny, steel, especially, of the CPK variety. I don’t have the refined CPK collection that some have, but very rarely let one go. I will actually count them, in the not too distant future. Mike

I figure that my collection is probably about a 1/4 of whatever Mike has now built up? 🤔

He started down the path of CPK's way before I ever came across a FK(1) or even a LC.

I sometimes will sell a CPK to help fund for another but I'm definitely missing a few.

To be frank... I think some of the members who frequent this sub-forum seem to exhibit a bit of obsessive/compulsive behavior to the word Carothers!

Especially, when it is engraved onto a piece of machined, heat treated steel.

Right back at brutha. Hope the great memories outweighed any bad ones.
Luckily for me 3-2 aint as bad as it once was 🥰

Ps Daddy made the smash cake. Used almond flour, applesauce and bananas to make a “healthier” version and it was 🔥
Ember is such a cutie and always smiling that big smile!!! Awesome to see brother!! Looks like she brought out a good Dad and Mom!!!! Keep it up!! 👊👍

That would be an interesting factoid to learn.

My Shiv will bring me one shy of a dozen. The only two holes that really need to be filled at this point for me are a Skinner and some form of Chopper. All else will be strictly for the fun and enthusiasm of the acquisition.
I also need a skinner and chopper.
Have a Dek1, UF2, K20, Shiv 2 ( on order), FK3 ( on order).
The Shiv and K20 being the just for fun blades. Others are much more practical obviously. So a skinner and chopper could definitely be justified. Although I do plan to use my K20. Even my Shiv will be stabbing something. I can’t do safe queens.

I think the elephant in the room is how many does Betzner have, and I’m guessing we’ll never know the answer to that.

the thing I like about the EDC is how it concentrates force in an easily controllable way. The further out the tip is from the handle, the less leverage you can apply to it, so the shorter length of blade is a big factor as to why the EDC works so well for tough jobs.
The other aspect is the relationship between the cutting edge and the position that the handle accommodates the hand for most cutting jobs. The point drops quite a bit from the centerline when holding the knife in a sabre grip. This generates a tangent from the edge to whatever it's cutting, creating a shearing cut.
Finally the 3 dimensional shape bunches the handle into the center of the hand, allowing enough fore and aft movement to give a springing effect while being thick enough for most hands to be able to wrap around enough to diminish fatigue.
Of all the CPKs that I have, the two most powerful cutters are the HC and the EDC- obviously the HC excels in the chopping realm of cutting while the EDC does not.
