Random Thought Thread

Someone who works for me got our building evacuated by putting a loaf of frozen bread in the microwave. Set it on high for 15 minutes and walked away. The amount of smoke was so great that nobody could get down that hallway.
I dated a girl once who thought you could hard boil an egg by microwaving it on high for a few minutes. Thankfully it was the work microwave.

I just got home from work to find my elderly neighbor sprawled at the bottom of his driveway. He busted up his elbow pretty bad and was bleeding, but it doesn't look like he hit his head. He's lucky it wasn't a day or 2 earlier when it was 102 degrees.

Long story short, me and another neighbor got him up and I cleaned his elbow. I met his daughter that lives in the basement. She doesn't have the strength to help him around and I think she may be mentally handicapped for a few reasons. I told her he needed stitches and that she needs to take him to the hospital. We helped get him into the truck so she could take him.

Anyhow, it doesn't sound like he's got any other family and I'm pretty concerned for his welfare. I talked to him for a good while and I'd be surprised if he doesn't have early onset alzheimers. I don't want to be one of those butt-insky neighbors, but I'm wondering if I should call someone to check on the situation. At the very least I'm going to get him a walker.

Does anyone have any experience with something like this?
Being a neighbor who cares is not being a butt-insky at all. I had a patient up here die from slipping on ice checking his mailbox. Nobody noticed him by the snow berm for quite a while.

As others have mentioned there are resources but they vary greatly depending on location. Different communities have different organizations and available help. If he went to an ER, generally the nurses are great at asking questions about home safety/resources, etc, and can get social services involved.

FWIW I think it is great to not turn a blind eye to those who need help.

I ordered a new base model Ford truck with a 33K tow capacity rating

So, for a little less than what a house used to cost when I was first looking at homes, I'll have a truck with no carpet, or much of anything else. Fortunately air conditioning comes stock. And I guess they did away with roll up windows? But a 500 horsepower turbo diesel is going to be cool. Even with the tunes and modifications that I have on my other trucks, they're not comparable.

I did add running boards so Jo can get in.

My last trip to Illinois towing back a small machining center with my old Ford is going to be my last time dealing with that kind of bullshit. I'll keep the old F-450 with the lift gate for runs to the dump and my beloved old F250 will be used for local trips, but I'm done flogging the shit out of it.
Congrats. So is it a 450?

Pics when you have time. And don’t tell me it’s white.

My first one ton, 20 years ago, wasn't white. So I painted it white....

This one's black.

Because that was the default color when it came up. And I didn't care enough to change it. I didn't look at the other options. Literally don't care.

I got the base model. Not because it was cheaper cuz I looked at the price and it really wasn't a significant difference once I added the stuff I needed. I just like it better because it's more basic. Unadorned. I don't want Chrome that's going to peel and power extension trailer mirrors that are just going to break and serve no real purpose, etc.

It's funny, I haven't really considered it before. But I like my trucks like I like my knives. No unnecessary adornment. Function first, and the add-ons reduce reliability without actually making the truck a better truck.

I did drop the $$$$ for the high output motor though. Stainless exhaust and water cooled turbo are probably a pretty good idea for me for the way I drive in the mountains.

I got four-wheel drive and the off-road package for the locking differential because I store my trailers in that field. This actually reduced my tow capacity a little bit but 33K is plenty.

Function function function. I care little about anything else.

I apply this same philosophy to my knife production. It's actually pretty wild people buy my work because I make no effort to make fancy cool looking stuff. Function function function.

Enjoy, sounds like a nice truck! I almost went with an HO but I don’t need it. 475/1050 is enough for me lol. Are the HO PowerStrokes still 500/1200 on the 450s? I know sometimes they dearer them, but no now that I’m thinking that is only cab and chassis models.
