On a positive note though we also have awesome fire fighters. I had an exciting night a couple of nights ago. The wife called me to the window to see this View attachment 2631846That was from my front porch. The next property over had 5 acres burn. I called it in and then called the neighbor to ask if he had seen it. He said it was at his place and he was fighting it off his house with a garden hose. I packed a few important items and threw them in the truck and left my wife to pack up the rest and prepare to evacuate. I grabbed all of my fire tools and headed out. There is no direct way to his place from mine. I hit the mountain road and ended up at a dead end. I called another neighbor for better directions and he came to join me. By the time I got there from 1/2 mile away, several fire trucks were already there. This is 3 miles out a crazy dirt mountain road that isn’t close to anything. A local guy that knew my neighbor and where he live lead the fire fighters there. They saved his house and everyone else’s for that matter. It was extremely impressive to see the quick and massive response. There was nothing but steep, inaccessible terrain and combustibles between here and there. So RESPECT to those people that are stay ready so they don’t have to get ready to head out on these calls.
Much respect to you and your neighbors jumping in to assist.

Firefighters are awesome! Very glad the house was saved. We had a big fire close to our cabin that burned like mad. The firefighters were amazing and the show of support from the locals was great.

BTW- RESPECT to you as well for jumping to answer the need. 👍

The 25 "healthiest" counties in the US:

https://www.usnews.com/news/healthiest-communities/slideshows/safest-counties-in-america?slide=16

Nr 11 is San Mateo county. Performs best in "Per capita spending on health and emergency services".

WTF does that even mean ? I have to admit, we have good fire fighters. And the most expensive hospitals in the country .... For example, > 20k for a one hour emergency visit when I had a kidney stone. :(
My bill to have stitches removed was $2500 give or take a few bucks. Should have pulled them myself. Co-pay was a few hundred bucks. We assumed it was all part of the initial service like all the other times I had stitches removed. Nope, not for the ER.

We had to replace our washer awhile ago. We went into the appliance shop and bought a no-nonsense, no frills Speed Queen. I've talked to various appliance techs over the years and they have all stated the same thing: appliances these days, with all their bells and whistles, are designed and manufactured to only last a handful of years.

The Speed Queen is commercial grade and was expensive but it will be easier to repair if needed and will last me a long, long time. I had to replace my dryer last week as well. I had repaired our old one several times to the point of ridiculous so we went out and bought something basic with no fancy bullshit.

The simpler you keep your appliances, the better off you'll be. In my opinion, of course.

It's unbelievable how much better and more reliable the old devices were. Lasting 20 years or more was not like some sort of miracle.
I have two extra refridgerators in my basement one is an old Frigidaire my parents bought when I was just a young boy over 50 years ago ... it's still running like a top.

I'm on my third refrigerator for my actual kitchen in the last 15 years.

I thought I had it good. I've got a handful of expensive appliances which are still in use since I bought this house just over 20 years ago.

I can't come close to 50 years. My mother's old Whirlpool washing machine was like that.

We just replaced an old dryer like this a couple of years ago, about as old as me. When you removed the front panel, there was a folded schematic behind it, and I was able to find parts online when I had to replace a $2 thermostat once. Our Samsung replacement plays differently annoying songs, depending on where it is in the cycle. 🙄

We're going through the same thing. We've been in our house for 23 years, starting with brand new kitchen appliances, and a bare-bones washer and dryer that we brought with us that were maybe a year old (and floor models).

Replaced the washer and dryer after about 16 years. Next washer only lasted 5 years, but still have the dryer.

Replaced the dishwasher a few years ago, so it lasted about 20.

Just replaced the stove and over-the-stove microwave a few weeks ago, so they lasted 23. They flat out told us that these days the design life is only 7-10 years. We also looked at fridges, but the wife wasn't ready to let ours go yet. At the time it was the biggest old-school top-freezer type we could find, and the new ones are kinda lame, cuz no one wants that type anymore (except my wife), so they don't put their best into them in terms of features. But now we have a new one coming that's a bit smaller so we'll see how that goes. We have another fridge in the basement, and I think we may have to get a bigger one to make up for the lost capacity.

Pàdruig Pàdruig , I think we looked at that Speed Queen a few years ago, but it had a smaller capacity so the wife wasn't interested.

These days, I get suspicious and extra cynical when products I am shopping for are feature heavy. It generally means that the design focus was feature over function. I want a long lasting dependable product that performs its purpose with little to no fuss - an abundance of features means more fuss and more things to go wrong.

You see it everywhere - auto industry, appliances, household items, tools, etc. Feature over function. We have auto manufacturers making vehicles that are solid, dependable, and affordable - they just can't be sold in the states because we require 20k+ worth of superfluous crap in order for it to be "road legal".

In knife context - I want a knife that functions as a knife. It doesn't need to be an axe, a saw, a hoe, a trowel, a ladder, or a wireless hotspot. It just needs to be a knife.

Hello friend!

I'm not sure what the capacity is on ours. I let the wife pick and it's been pretty great for us so far. If we're still around in 10 years, I'll report on how well it's held up. It's built like a tank so I am cautiously optimistic.

This sounds way more rant-like than I intended. Just supposed to be observational musings.
