Random Thought Thread

My count of cars only includes the ones I drive or drove. If you add my wife's cars over the years you'd need to add a Subaru Justy, OG Impreza 2 wheel drive, several Outbacks. Outbacks were a rapid upgrade for us due to feature sets we wanted/needed. We usually keep them much longer. Only the OG Impreza had a serious issue. The AC seized. It was replaced by the dealer, no charge and the car never had issues after that.

So damn true!
I’m on battery #4 in my 2015 Forester Premium with 115k, #3 in what was my Dad’s 2018 Outback Touring that only has 24k on it and #2 in my Mom’s 2020 Accent Touring with 70k.
I’ve done quite a bit of research and read that the alternators are programmed to only charge to 80%, which is quite odd, but I’m sure there’s a “good” reason.
I also found out that the Starlink system kills batteries on multiple models because they run on the 3g network which no longer exists, so it eventually kills the lithium ion battery behind the head unit that controls it, so it starts piggybacking off the car battery.
I just ordered a pigtail that bypasses Starlink for the Outback so hopefully I’ll be able to get that car back to being reliable.
That damn car left my Dad stranded near Holbrook once when he was headed to your neck of the woods back in 2020. Thank god he had a portable jumper.
Yep, I started using AGM deep cycle batteries from Batteries Plus Bulbs, but also noticed the not charging to 100% thing. I have an aftermarket stereo (Pioneer AVIC 8200NEX) that doesn't like the Forester's charging system and doesn't always start up, but it was flawless in my WRX before I moved it over when I put the stock stereo back in the WRX.

Subaru had a recall for the 3G Starlink that gave people a free LTE upgrade if done by a certain date, and if they had an active startlink plan at the time it was announced. I had a Maestro RR in the WRX that let the Starlink work with 3rd party stereos, but Subaru was not able to program the Starlink without reinstalling the factory stereo (I already had Pioneer, Maestro RR, JL 5-ch amp, Rockford 750W sub amp, Focal 165FX speakers, 2x 10" subs and was too much trouble for Starlink to go stock).

I removed the Starlink and installed a Compustar instead for remote lock, unlock, alarm, GPS tracking, with phone and remote start with phone or key fob (even with a manual transmission). When we got rid of the WRX we kept the stereo but not the Compustar - wish I'd pulled that too.

Yeah they tried to talk me into that update but I would have to subscribe to a 2 year Starlink plan that I would never use, so I kindly told them where to stick it.
I’d rather spend $80 and buy the pigtail instead of dealing with that BS, plus they can’t follow my every move now because it’ll be off their network.
I honestly think these will be the last Subarus in the family because I really can’t stand being lied to by a company that knows there’s a problem, but won’t admit to it.
I’ll probably go the Blues route and buy a pre 2023 4Runner next go around. They may get mediocre gas mileage, but at least they’re on a truck chassis and are nearly bulletproof.

I have a 2016 Trail Edition Premium

Is your Aquis a 400 calibre? Excellent taste regardless. 🍻

I don't know what this means, but it sounds expensive!! 🤣
In the scheme of watches, his piece is in a category of extremely high quality for price... paralleling CPK's philosophy quite closely. It ain't cheap, for sure, but DocJekl DocJekl 's choice shows a particular taste that we here can really appreciate;

-Pay up front
-Beat the living Shinola out of it, knowing it'll take it
-Have a relatively obscure, humble company with disgustingly high standards behind it that will take care of you
