Random Thought Thread

I just watched a 20 minute long video about turning a sphere inside out.

I thought it was going to be about geometry but I think it might be about topography?
Topology. It’s a branch of abstract mathematics.

I jumped down the rabbit hole somewhere around middle school. Things like Mobius strips fall under the umbrella (an object that has only one side).

Other fun parts of topology (makes you start thinking outside the box); in topology, you can say that any article of clothing that can be removed without first needing to remove another article of clothing, = that piece of clothing isn’t technically ‘inside’.

The scene where Jennifer Beals removes her bra, without removing the sweatshirt = an exercise in topology.

Years later, I saw the episode of Mr Bean changing into swim trunks at the beach = a funny exercise in topology.

I think I was 15-16 when my dad came back from a business trip. Apparently, while on the trip, he stopped by a store that specialized in brain teasers and puzzles.

My mom said, “We’ve all tried this one already, and timed how long it took. I got 5:xx minutes, your dad took 6:xx, and your brother took 7:xx (he became a graphic artist. Not particularly scientific minded). We’re curious to see how long it’ll take you”. It was made of soft vinyl and flexible.

They handed it to me and said, “Go”. I looked it over, and said, “Oh, this is a topological exercise”. Bent one section, folded it and separated the pieces, in about 17 seconds IIRC. My parents expression 🫤

If you are talking about Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion map, that is a good way to bring flat-earthers into the fold. You can actually fold one of these flat projections into a globe.

Jeez, you leave for a week and this place turns into G.E. College Bowl.

Ran to Costco this morning. Then sealed up the wife’s trucks leaking rear window/third brake light. (Notorious on every single Ram truck ever made). Washed my truck. Watching football now. I need to mow the lawn but think that can wait until tomorrow evening.

Your wife's reflection has that "wtf are you doing look" hahahaha

Well this made my day. Day 10 without power here in SC. Sooo happy to see these guys this evening! Just need internet restored now. 🍻

Also having a manual pump installed on my well. We will not be without water again regardless of power or fuel.

Man, I got this 1911 the other day and I almost immediately lost this little dippy-doo on the end of this who who dilly here.

I noticed it was more or less the same size and shape as a cartridge casing and with a minor modification, it seems to be working fine? *shrug*

My shop is so clean, neat and organized, I just can't imagine how I could have lost it. It's weird.
