Random Thought Thread

The roof is getting there.

Looking good!

Just ordered some pickled Herring. The wife doesn’t understand why I like it.

When I grew up we mostly had Herring salad on Christmas Eve. Pickled Herring, beets, apples, potatoes & onions is what I remember.

This makes for a good thought exercise - in my opinion, anyway. We have had it pretty damn good in America for so long that we don't tend to give a lot of thought these days towards long-term food preservation. Sure, we load our processed food up with chemical preservatives, have reliable electricity and freezers, so as a society we make a meme out of foods that utilize longstanding and traditional means of food storage and preservation.

If we ever get to a point where things are not great (gods forbid) and we experience food shortages, infrastructure failures and such, I think many folks will be giving pickled, fermented, aged, etc. meats and foods another look.

I like pickled herring and though I haven't tried more extreme examples of preserved meats like surströmming or hakárl, I definitely aspire to. Those old ways, and the necessity that drove them, are fascinating to me.

Just a "random" thought...

When COVID rolled-around, I had been taking care of a VERY sick lady (*my Mom) for about seven years. Being isolated and secluded was nothing for us. Beyond that, I was still tasked with going out into the World for our basic needs. How I never brought that shit home is still a miracle that I wrestle with.

But here's the random thought...

Around Thanksgiving of this year, a few weeks back, I managed to become afflicted with some respiratory virus that is running rampant here around South Texas (*San Antone). Within the first week, I was hoping for death...and was pretty sure that I would get there.

At 54 years of age, and even after suffering with acute and chronic Asthma as a child, I believe that I'm beginning to understand the gravity of some of these respiratory illnesses as I age. It's been "eye opening", to say the least.

Just a stupid post. Carry on.
