Thanks. The fuel cap very well maybe the culprit. I read about that being a problem when it came on the first time. So, I tightened it up, the next time I went out there was no light on. Then the following time it came back on, but I had filled up in there somewhere. When I tightened it I only get one click and I was trying to remember if it used to keep clicking as I tried to tighten it more. Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll probably just get a new oem fuel cap and try that.
A lot of these readers can be left on while running/driving the vehicle. You can get all kinds of stats in real time.

And probably unrelated - my old 6.5l Chevy had an intermittent check engine light. Took it to a shop after my reader gave me nothing to go on. They also failed to diagnose the cause. A friend of mine who was a mechanic at a Chevy dealership told me to get a new gas cap. I laughed because I thought he was joking. I replaced the gas cap (with OEM) and the problem went away. I hope you find a similarly, easy to fix solution.

I spent a lot of time on the duramax forum back then. Ended up getting a lot of good advice and fixing most problems myself.

Update: I ordered the diagnostic tool and the fuel cap. The fuel cap arrived before the tool so I installed it. So far the check engine light has not resurfaced. I have only been out driving the truck once since the new fuel cap was installed, but I drove a couple hundred miles and no light. Thanks for recommendations.

I've had that happen in the past as well, where replacing the cap was all that was needed. Hope it stays that way.

Just saying...
When I was an apprentice I worked for an old timer that would always test for live voltage by licking his thumb and index finger then pinch the twisted wires. I did that once.
