Random Thought Thread

I'm with Casinostocks Casinostocks that this knife needs the benefit of the extra gription. Having said that, you guys know me.... I can't look at a knife without wondering what it would look like clad in wood scales. I've looked at the pictures of this knife a dozen times, debating if I should go for it. They look doable (no inside-out thumb rests, for example - what a pain those are to make!). I don't have the ability to do the fine machined texture, so they would be smooth if I attempted it. Might have to scratch this itch...

You definitely ought to do it :)

I'm going to go ahead and post the preorder now and leave it locked until tomorrow. That will answer questions about options etc. but still open it on the original schedule.

Thank you Nathan, that was a great move by you which helped a lot in making some proactive decisions. A lout bum or what not, Unc. Matty still lurves ya!

I'm thinking sharpened back tip and mystery wood on the preorder. The dagger grind is tempting but if you opt for it I think the right thing to do is to go all in and upgrade to satin too, and wood handles. Actually I'm starting to wonder if it's morally acceptable to order wood handles without satin. This is a lot of responsibility...

WOOHOO!!!

Thanks Nathan!!!

BTW, some of the images posted in the locked thread aren't showing up. One of the things I wanted to clarify was the difference between the sharpened back vs the doubled edged dagger:
- Is the sharpened back, simply the regular UF, but with that angled section on the back, sharpened to an edge?
- and the doubled edged dagger is ground like the photos we've seen of that rare double edged UF?

Does anyone know if there are any advantages/disadvantages to acid washing? Or is it aesthetics only?

The sharpened point will be sharpened back for about a half an inch of edge behind the tip. But double edge dagger grind is indeed a double-edged, dagger grind, meaning the knife cuts in both directions. Be aware this is illegal in many locations.

Some example of acid washed, sharpened top edge and satin finish on some older CPKs. The UF is the one with about an inch of sharpened top edge:

The Shiv has an edge grind which still remains a mystery, i.e, "meat eating grind". So apart from the blatantly obvious answer, Nathan for the umpteenth friggin time, what's a meat eating grind?

You gotta cut some meat with it and find out man

We all know that he's just fudging with me on here by totally ignoring me. Outside of here though, he's a BIG pussycat!

The standard Shiv started out a full 1/4", was sharpened 23 DPS and was something like 1/16" behind the edge. You could literally break apart a brick wall with it. A pig sticker needed to be thinner so some were made as meat eaters. Specifically thinner grinds, less reinforcement behind the point and a narrow edge. Our transition into optimized 3V made some of the overbuilt designs less necessary.

I could easily be mistaken but if that's the knife I'm thinking of, someone attempted to sharpen it (a random vandal perhaps) and made a mess of things so it was returned to the shop for some love. The rework left it thinner, more of a pig sticker. It wouldn't be something I'd use to open a hole in a stone wall but it is thinner and well suited to poke holes into mushy things like feral pigs and people. My own personal Shiv is similar.

ether that or you may have one of the old pig stickers, the bevels look original

edit: I think that's a pig shanker. There were only a few of those

How do you like that secondary 1" edge?

What are you all leaning towards? And for scales?

There is so much interest in the UF that I am convinced I will be missing out if I pass this up and am trying to figure out which will be best for me. The full dagger would be sweet, but I'd never be able to leave home with it with the interpretative laws here.
