Random Thought Thread

My bird story for today is not nearly as dramatic.

When I took the dog out this morning, there was a tiny little bird up by our parking area lying on its side seemingly hyperventilating. I kept the dog away and returned to it after our walk...and it was sitting upright and flew to a nearby tree.

I went out to check on it a bit later and it was on the treated lumber alongside the other side of the parking area. So I put on some gloves and it looks like one of its wings was damaged or inoperable. I put it in an area to be as comfortable as it could be until nature took its course. I didn't have the heart to kill it.
That's more than most people would do. It's crazy how birds are so fragile but also fairly durable. I have seen some slam into a window and look like they broke their neck only to revive in a few minutes and fly off, while others that appear to have minor injuries die within minutes.

Several years ago there was a bird on my lawn that appeared to have a damaged wing. I'm not sure how it's Wing was hurt, but it wasn't moving it and the bird could not fly. I was on my lunch break from work so I scooped it up and put it in a large box with breathing holes in it and left it with some food and water. I contacted a few sanctuaries that said they would take it and care for it, etc., but by the time I got home 4 hours later it had died.

I don't know how true it is, but I was told that the shock from a significant injury or encounter can cause Birds to die from the stress.

Yes. 1975 Westy in school bus yellow (and rust). I’ve had it a little over 20 years. Lots of family trips where we pushed her way further than anyone in the extended family thought she’d make it. Good times.
mine was '74, first vehicle I owned. Drove/fixed it for many years and ending up selling it for what I paid. The guy who bought it completely refurbished it and sold it for about 6x what he paid

I was sitting in my garage this morning drinking my coffee, looking out onto the street.
A grackle went flying past the front of my garage and I was suddenly startled by a shadow. The shadow was from a raptor that expertly flew directly into my garage, snagging the grackle out of the air.
The raptor did a 180 degree turn less than ten feet in front of me (brushing the manual release string on the garage door opener) and flew back out again with the grackle in talon.
The space was pretty tight.
Although brutal, it was also extremely impressive.
It was like watching a fighter jet with thrust vectoring do one of those sliding turns.

That's pretty awesome. I love seeing stuff like that. Nature is METAL.

Thank you. ‘Tis something to behold!

Stared at the image for hours……Drove me crazy wondering if it was the 2nd stage of the Stunner or the “Diamondcutter”…..

I (like you) like to think that it is the Stunner!!!
The Stunner ends up with a sitting position. The Diamond Cutter has the person laying flat. I'd have to look at the Constitution for the exact details on what Washington did, but I'm leaning towards Stunner.

That is a beautiful painting of George Washington hitting a Redcoat with the Valley Forge Stunner®.
