Definitely never seen it glob up like that inside the trunk, only out of wounds. I usually look for larger lower branches that snapped off long ago. Can often find 4-6" long pieces 2" diameter that are damn near solid resin all the way through. Old stumps occasionally, too, but not as often or consistent.It definitely is good fire starter. It is from Douglas Fir trees at my place. Usually, and in this case, larger the better standing dead trees have the most and best. You can see the veins of it in the round here.
