I feel strongly that the Deutsche Reinheitsgebot is much less about “purity” and in fact was a law passed to protect inferior German beer from having to compete in the marketplace with the far superior Belgian beers (and also Northern German beers) which had additional ingredients, more innovative brewing methods and recipes, and generally higher alcohol content (usually achieved by added sugar during the bottling process). In my opinion this yields a stronger, tastier, and healthier beer due to the live active cultures in most bottle conditioned Belgian beers.
Today, if you compare the “best” German beers to the “best” Belgian beers, I believe a reasonable and objective beer drinker would have to honestly agree that Belgian beers such as Chimay, Westmalle, Delirium, and Westvleteren are so superior to German beers that it is no contest.
I realize this is a somewhat controversial view of things, but the world deserves the truth.
