How does one snap that thing? Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist

Half inch hardened steel bolt and a 4 pound hammer. 4V is pretty tough, but it's not indestructable. It has very good edge durability, and narrow angle fine edge stability and is brilliant in a competition cutter. But when it fails it fails catastrophically. It is a knife nut niche steel

But ya gotta admit, it's one gorgeous break!

Touch up that break with a bit of epoxy and pitch it into a "flipper pile", lol.

Do you suppose the result would have been the same if it had been struck with a hardwood rather than the hammer on this particular test? Or would it just be impossible to get enough force to drive it through the bolt that way?

Id love to see a video of that

I think it would be pretty hard to develop enough energy to hammer it through a 1/2 inch bolt using a wooden baton. I was hitting that pretty hard when it broke.

Well if you have the D2 HDFK you do have 1/20, 1 of 20 that were sold, makes sense in NJ but idk. It doesn't have a serial number but having 1 out of 10 (or 2 or 3 of 10) in existence doesn't change how rare it is IMO.

Na I'm not gonna sell it, I'm just gonna keep it on the boat at the marina in case of shark attacks. I dont trust the seagulls either.

At least 21 D2 HDFK were sold. 20 in the sale on here, and the one with antique micarta Nathan snuck out in the Knifemakers sale section the other week.

So I haven't read every post in the last two pages yet, but I saw the D2 NASK went for a premium. Not gonna lie.. I almost pulled the trigger myself. I really want a D2 version. Additionally, my confidence is way down on Friday sales because of my work schedule. I'm probably going to have to suck it up and sell some other knives to cover the secondary market prices. Bummer.

Trying to enumerate Nathan's knives or to assess their rarity for whatever the reason is really waste of time! Let's just be very grateful that he uses BFC to market the lion share of his productions but his marketing and sales are not just limited (wisely so) to here. For instance there's the Blade Shows, Fort Henry Knives and his special project for which the books are currently closed, just to name a few (plus that infamous creek running in the back of the compound with murky, alligator stocked, waters).

Admittedly he's been incorporated since 2001 and I'm sure that he's been around the tool making industry for a lot longer. Case in point, he knows a lot of people and I'm sure that there are some channels which he wishes to keep close to his vest (meaning that us nosy buggers are not privy to). We get what we get, the fastest to the draw win and ought to consider themselves very lucky to have scored. That method is still the best and the surest way of getting a CPK other than buying him a lil plump pony :D

If we all pony up and pitch in, we can get Nathan a pony! See what I did there? :)

"That doesn't look like anything to me!"

WestWorld Reference! Can't wait for Season 2 in 2018. I may even end up liking it more than Game of Thrones!
