Random Thought Thread

Laplander or a small Opinel saw, smallish fixed blade in the 4" to 5" vicinity, (too many to mention, custom or production but now a distinct CPK lean), sometimes a Gransfors Bruks Mini.

I rarely find the need for extensive use of the blade. It's more of a "just have to have it" thing overall.

What’s everyone bushcraft/woods bumming knife? When I’m out I typically bring a Laplander saw, esee junglas, and a FK2. That combination gets everything I need done and more. The saw and esee are in/on my backpack with other supplies and FK2 is on my hip.

Usually either a firefly-handled Hawkins knife from Dan Eastland or a GSO 5.1 (occasionally a HDFK). I pair that with a silky saw and a hatchet. Now I’m going to swap the hatchet and the knife with a Dave Beck WSK. Oh, in my pocket I often carry a CPK edc2. Love that knife.

Which silky do you carry? Folding or other?

I thought long and hard about getting one of their Katana sized versions for work on my small property, but ended up with Corona instead for my limited usage.

It’s a Silky pocketboy with large teeth. Amazing saw. I use it all the time. Been thinking of getting a larger one lately like the bigboy w/extra large teeth.

My neighbor grows the most amazing cows. Just amazing.

Nathan's picture of a "Retriever and Pheasant" in meat reminded me of this.

Years ago, I bought a Jasper bench stone from the late Ragnar of "Ragnar's Ragweed Forge". It was primarily because I liked the look of the stone and it would be used for a swipe or two on a knife that was already sharp from time to time.

When it arrived, I was floored and called my wife over to look at the stone and tell me what she saw...

"It's 'Smoky'!!!"

And damned if it wasn't...to our minds...our (now late) Weimaraner enshrined in a piece of stone.

It still blows my mind.

I've done my best to capture it in these old images I took some years back.

Posted on the forum before, but I got used to using bigger knives for everything and appreciate the added reach and power when delimbing, chopping, splitting etc.

If raw fire building/wood processing is going to be needed, my regular backwoods combo for a while, has been a folding Silky saw (the Ultra Accel lately. I like the curved blades. They're a little more efficient) and a large camp knife (over the years, the Junglas was a consideration, but I never bought one. I've used everything from a Cold Steel Trailmaster, to a kukri).

Ever since getting a CPK MC, that's become my go-to. I can do just about any/everything knife/blade related that I need to with it. If I REALLY need a smaller blade for some reason, I also always have a folder (the ZT0562. Well built and strong, but still cuts/slices well).

If I'm on groomed trails etc., I just have the FK2 and leave the Silky and MC at home.

What every man needs when he hits the trail...

Yeah, I watched his reviews when the Katanaboy first came out and thought, "Ooooo...", then I realized I don't really need to take down trees with a manual saw. If I need to take down trees, I'll grab a chainsaw.

In the sticks, I rarely bother processing any wood thicker than 6" - 8" thick. 10" thick or more is too much trouble, hence my preference for the Silky Ultra Accel with a 240mm blade. I also have the Big Boy XL, but that one either stays home, or in the trunk (never know when you might need to saw something 😁).

Since I hate dealing with gas, I get by on my small 1+ wooded acres with one of these. If I have downed trees, and a big job, my neighbors come by with their gas saws to lend a hand.

It's a pretty amazing saw, got it at a great price a while back on amazon, and have extra batteries from my 80v Blower. So, I always have batteries charged.

Lots of good reviews on youtube.

10" is no problem with my 14" and 18" Corona saws...unless I need to be there all day. I like manual saws.
