Random Thought . . .

Proudly removed 2 knives from my EB watch list and from my auction sniper program yesterday. :)

Currently, there are NO knives on my EB or ACK watch/saved lists and NO knives that I am interested in buying on the Exchange.

A rare occasion, indeed! LOL!!! ;)
The day is still young. ACK just dropped the Monday restock 😅. Im doomed

No new enticements for me at ACK but if they'd drop the $1300-1400 asking price for one of the Szaboflies to $500, I'd be on it (as they say) like a 'fly on sh*t"!!!

Fortunately, there's NO chance of THAT! So, I'm "safe" for now.

LOL!!! ;)

Fact is, I already own "too many" knives w/a collection that currently stands at 351 knives most of which are worth more than $150-250 each. Do the math.

I've got an ABSOLUTE limit of $500 per knife (including tax and shipping, if any) but that still leaves A LOT of knives that I could buy.

I don’t have and likely never will have a collection that approaches yours. I’ve dialed back purchases (in number or pieces) already.

Is the gun factor the only thing that sets your cap, or does the appeal of being able to purchase more frequently play a roll as well?
I haven’t broken the $500 barrier yet, but I certainly plan to.

How would you [or anyone else reading this thread (or we could start another thread all together) ] hypothetically do it all over if you had your collection value in hand.

The $500 "gun" limit is a rationalization, of course, but it's one that makes sense, given my individual finances and circumstances.

Virtually every knife that I'd want to buy costs less than $500 and I can easily afford to spend $500 on anything (not just knives) w/o concern.

So, it is a very easy rule for me to follow.

The few knives that I'd like to own that cost more than this I can do without and I do not feel "deprived" that I do not own them because the only reason that I do not own them is because I choose not to buy them (not because I can not afford them).

Each person has to set their own financial limit based on their individual finances and circumstances.

I have only been actively collecting knives for about 4 years. It was a very rapid process.

When I started, my limit was $100. That's when I just bought budget priced Kershaws, CRKTS, Cold Steel and other lower priced knives. I bought a lot of them. I learned a lot about knives in the process and the "mistakes" I made were not costly.

Then, I raised the limit to $250, in order to purchase ZT, Spyderco, vintage Kershaws and other knives that I found of interest. Most of the knives that I've ever purchased are below this limit (and the average cost of the knives in my collection is in this price range) but there were still a few more above this limit that I wanted to buy.

So, I raised the limit to $500 in order to purchase those few more costly knives that also interested me

One step led to the next. I've learned a lot (could still learn more) and I've built a collection that some would envy in the process. So, I don't think that I would have done anything differently.

Still buying . . .

Just bought my 2nd knife of 2022. A ZT 0452GL variation that I have been looking for to complete my 0452 collection. :)

Will post pics as soon as I receive it.

Glow in the dark Zero Tolerance Sinkevich design. That's pretty cool and likely pretty sold out by now.

It was sold out long ago.

Passed on it when it 1st came out because of the "glow in the dark" (GLD) gimmick but I wanted it because it's a DLC and if I don't hold it in the "dark", it won't "glow" and would look fine to me. LOL! ;)

If I could replace the GLD scales w/a pair of plain OEM G10 or CF scales I would. There are some aftermarket scales available for the 0452 but nothing that I'd want to buy to replace the GLD scales with that I've seen so far.

Yes but sometimes I will see a good deal on something that wasn't on my radar or wasn't that interested in and buy it anyway. Once in awhile they become a new favorite or I just sell it 🙂

Here's another random thought:

Why is everyone afraid of noting a G&S sale processed thru PayPal as a knife?

The "rumor" is that PayPal is suspending/terminating accounts when they discover that knife sales are being sold via G&S but, if that's the case, why does PayPal process knife sales thru EB w/o any such prohibitions?

I have purchased A LOT of knives thru EB using Amex via PayPal -- just 2 in the past couple of weeks -- and PayPal isn't refusing to process the sales or close my account (or the accts of the sellers) as a result.

So, how did this "rumor" get started?

I am so happy that the guy I bought my Espada XL (And tanto Voyager XL, and a GRIK) from, accepted G&S. I was sure when he asked for the other type at first, it wasn't going to work.

If it's a large price tag on it I will have a sense of relief for sure. It's such an impulse thing on the swap. Once you've committed to buying it then there no going back so that drives you forward, but I will usually have a pang of guilt. Someone snagging it out from under me gives me the same feeling I get when someone cancels plans with me and I can just enjoy my night the way I want to.

I feel the same relief when a Spyderco Exclusive I want but don't need sells out before I can buy one.

I have no business with this many knives, already. I don't need half of what I own, lol.

Well, my "luck" ran out today. :(

Saw a knife on the Exchange that I liked but didn't know anything about. Took the time to do some research on the knife -- cost and construction. Decided that I liked the knife and the price.

The knife was still there when I got back and the seller was willing to take PayPal G&S for payment, so I was done for and had no excuse NOT to buy it.

Just as I was going to post an "I'll take it," BF when "down" -- just got 404 error msgs for awhile -- and thought I had been "saved" -- but then the website came back up and I posted the commitment to buy it.

Just my "bad luck." The stars were simply aligned to "make me "spend my $. But, I do think I'll still enjoy owning the knife nonetheless.

LOL!!! ;)

I wanted a CF Native badly for over a year, maybe two now, but kept missing out until I saw it in stock at knivesandtools earlier this week. I messed up the card payment twice and instead of taking that as a sign I walked to the bank and made a wire transfer. I need adult supervision. :)

Here's a new thought . . .

I just noticed a recent trend in the Exchange of sellers LOCKING their threads to prevent any replies within the thread and requiring all "negotiations" to take place by PM.

While I can understand why a seller would want to do this, it it makes transactions entirely "opaque."

For example, in an "open" thread you can post a claim or 2nds or 3rds to an initial "I'll take it!" offer and you'll know exactly where you stand in the wait list, if the 1st offer fails.

In a closed thread, no one knows who has made an offer to buy the knife and where they stand in "line" (if there is one) because the seller controls all communications.

It has always been possible to negotiate privately w/a seller w/o posting more than a "PM sent" in the thread but I feel that this new practice is contrary to the "spirit" of the Exchange and is yet another reason for me to NOT offer to buy a knife, even if I'm interested in it.
