Random thoughts from GVI....

Steven- You did not mention that the Dozier D2 cuts very well.
Will I meet you at BLADE this year?

Hello Rolf.

The Dozier D2 knives cut fairly well, so do a tremendous amount of other knives including the famous Busse INFI steel, which have many models in a similar price range.

I'm not sure about Blade yet....can we continue with GVI?

Thank you, Steven.
I was going to attend next year's Gathering but I have changed my mind.

Lycosa, i encourage you to read my review...i think you will get a more positive impression. The Gathering is a phenomenal show. The lottery issue is not specific to the Gathering, all shows are moving in that direction. Some shows are even entirely lottery based.

Hi Robert,

From what I have gathered of Rolf's interests in bladeware(tantos with chisel profiles) he may have a greater variety of makers and many more choices at Blade. Obviously, he is the only one who can make an educated choice, but for me, if the only options were Blade or The Gathering, I would choose the Blade Show.

I don't think I painted the Gathering in negative light at all.....for me, it is a "must" attend show.

Best Regards,

Thanks for the review.

After the last Blade Show I decided to pare back on the number of shows I am attending. I attended four shows in 2013 - only two this year. The only shows I am definitely planning to attend going forward are the AKIs and the Solvang show (as long as I keep getting invited, anyway!). No more ECCKS or NYCKS. Maybe Blade or Arkansas every two or three years, and maybe a rumored combined ABS/Knifemaker's Guild Show (!?!) next year.

However, as a USN member for a few years now, I am hoping to make it to the Gathering at least once . . . maybe next year?

BTW, I apologize - I am not sure why my text is cutting the lines short halfway across the page. If anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong, I would appreciate it. TIA!

EDIT - the problem I mentioned above has now disappeared. Strange!

I think the USN Gathering is a great show. I haven't been to many shows but the Gathering is my favorite. For the USN crowd it is not just a knife show, it is really a gathering of friends. For most knifemakers who do lotteries, it is because if they didn't then they'd be out of knives 5 minutes into the show. It would be a crazy frantic rush for the first few minutes and then nothing left for the next day or two. Big mistake when you pay for a table and have nothing to show. The lotteries also eliminate the need for people to line up outside at 4:am to get the knife they want. It gives a chance for people who can't get there that early. Overall knifemakers do lotteries for their customers and not for themselves. It's actually more work to sell by lottery than to sell first come first served.

Thanks for giving some perspective Ray. Personally, I believe if someone (often with lots of knives to begin with) can't get their golden fleece in a lottery, they just need to keep trying, or save their money and pay the after market price. Sometimes as people get older, they tire of past passions, hobbies, jobs...and rather than accept it as change in themselves, they blame the world that is changing around them. Lotteries are certainly more equitable than the "old boy network" of rich existing customers and friends+hot maker.
