Range series

Ok guys, help me out. I’ve been eyeballing this Range series now since it was first announced, and I might have some funds freeing up in the next few days. I’ve been waiting because I’ve been on a bit of a shopping spree this past month, most of which were thumb stud folders, a few of those also being crossbar locks. Do I need another thumb stud folder with a crossbar lock? Of course not - I didn’t need any of the ones I just bought. But one of these has been on my short list of next last knives, and once again, as usual, I’ve got the itch. The question is, Elite or Pro? I’m leaning heavily toward the Elite, mostly because, well, I have no good reason other than having several other GFN or similar handles, but not many aluminiminums. I haven’t completely ruled out a Pro yet, because being cheaper it’s more likely to get carried. The argument against that is, I haven’t completely ruled many other knives in that range that could also get carried but don’t because I have so damn many of them, among those being two Sprint Selects. So whether it’s going to get used regularly isn’t really a major part of the decision. Which brings me back to the Elite being my first choice.

And then there’s option #3: wait and see if Buck drops a crossbar lock flipper along the lines of the Vantage or Sprint lines.

So I turn to you, my knowledgeable and enabling brothers, to give me your pros and cons for each for me to chew on. Go ahead, I’m waiting. 😁

I learned long ago to get what you want the first time (Elite). If you get something else, you will always have that nagging “I wonder what the Elite is like” and you will end up buying it also!

My personal like is the Pro for a better grip.

I'd like to chime in with an opinion based on experience with the Range Elite, but my order still hasn't shipped from Buck. Will be one month on Friday since I ordered!

That aside, I say go for it and order an Elite. You only live once, might as well have one!! The Youtube reviews have been stellar.

What color did you order? I saw someone earlier in this thread say their order was delayed after placing it the first day it was available (was that you?). I think it was green, which is also showing as a pre-order at KC right now. Hmmmm … gray is also pretty-order only.

And yes, every review I’ve seen so far is glowing - they all love this knife.

Edit: It is done. Black Range Elite ordered from Buck, estimated delivery October 2. I knew you guys would come through. 😆

You said it 3/4 of the way in your post.' The Pro ... most likely to get carried'

I should have said ‘more likely’, which is still not highly likely given all the other similar knives in my meager collection. But now after giving it more thought, considering the smoothness of the Elite, it’s probably an equal or even greater possibility that it will get carried. It all depends on what I think I’d be doing with it that day, the mood I’m in when I’m filling my pockets, whether I’ve had breakfast yet, if I picked a good K-cup or a crappy one, and which way the wind is blowing. I’m just guessing until I actually get it in my hand, but I have a few other knives with textured handles that don’t get carried because of what they do to my pocket. I don’t know if the Pro is as rough as those, but that possibility did weigh into the decision to go with the Elite.

I like your thought process! 😀

Haven’t handled the Elite…
Pocket clip is not reversible?

As a lefty, the Pro is reversible.
Too bad the they didn’t do that with the elite.

Yes, the clip is reversible on the Elite. It screws in on the butt end of the handle instead of the sides; just remove it, flip it around, and screw it back into the same holes.

Please send me a private message with your order number so I can track it down. Yes we did oversell on the green but I would like to take a closer look.

So my 791 pro showed up.
I'm not familiar with this style of lock, it took a bit of fumbling to figure how best to open this thing.
Discovered pulling back on the lock I can both flip it open or closed. Alright, that'll work.

Man this thing is sharp.
I don't dislike the frn scales, but I sure don't like them either. Makes me think of all the slim 110/112s I gave away for the same reason.

I'll play with it some more, and maybe I'll warm up to it.
The action is great.
Put some real scales on this knife and it would be awesome..... Initially I think it feels.....cheap.
At least I didn't pay full price.

I got this Range Pro in my pocket again today with a cousin from another company.

I own both the Range Elite and the Range Pro, and after carrying them both for several weeks I definitely prefer the Pro. The action and the fit in the hand is definitely my preference, and the fit/finish and design is immaculate. It has a much sturdier handle thickness and material than its cousin.

Personal opinion so far: the Pro is worth the price tag, while the Elite is overpriced due to the current Magnacut steel hype.
