First carve with the 791 Range Pro

Nice work!

The Buck website says flat ground. I’ve heard others refer to it as a saber grind.
R Roamad , yes, they are flat ground, but not full flat ground - hence the saber grind name. You can see the line in the pictures above where the flat grind bevel stops. The area with the Buck USA mark is full blade width, with the top and bottom surfaces being parallel - no taper towards the edge, and no distal taper, either.

Personally, I'm a hollow ground fan, but this saber grind/non-full flat grind is a close second and I have no problems with it at all.

Mini Range Pro finally arrived. So far, I like it. The material is light and quite grippy. Easy for my fumble fingers to operate. No detail review, others such as Culprit99 Culprit99 have been doing better than I would. Just a visual comparison to another small modern Buck others might have - the Vantage Small. I forgot to grab a thickness shot - to my uncalibrated mark I eyeballs the Mini Range is just under 2/3 of the thickness, not counting pocket clip.

I will be in on one or two in the far future under the program or if I can find one on the secondary for a decent price! I would go for the Pro and not the “Elite”. (I have no idea who names them, but imho, find someone different)

A few more thoughts after handling for a while.

The Vantage Small is more "slip in the pocket" friendly IMHO, the Mini Range Pro grips my pocket material going in and out.

My hand & fingers can operate the Mini Range Pro with no slippage or fumbling - a huge win over quite a few other small modern knives I've tried, of the types of opening and locks I prefer.

The Vantage Small could have been the perfect small modern pocket knife for me, but the flipper nub is just too small for my finger, and it is a two-handed opener. For me. Otherwise the blade size, handle shape and texture, and liner lock work great. Again, for me.

I'm debating trying an Mini Elite to see how the smooth aluminum would work with my hand & fingers, being able to slip in & out of the pocket easier would be a plus for me, but not at the expense of fumbling the knife when opening/ closing.

These days, either the Vantage Small or the Mini Range are enough knife for probably 99% of what I use a pocket knife for, the exception being the occasional piece of food when I don't have a kitchen knife handy. Since I do occasionally need to open/ close a knife one-handed, I'm currently leaning toward the Mini Range.

My Range Elite tracking says it was delivered to the mailbox today, however, there was nothing in my mailbox. I'm hoping the PO goofed up and its here tomorrow. Our neighborhood mail carrier has goofed up deliveries multiple times in the past, so I have my fingers crossed it gets sorted out. I've been chomping at the bit for months to get my hands on a Range and ordered it as soon as it dropped on Buck's website. If the PO put it in someone else's box, I hope they are honest folks and don't just pocket my purchase!

I hate it when that happens - good luck.

If you call your local post office they can use GPS technology to see where the mailman was standing when he scanned it. If he didn’t scan it at your residence, they will send him to retrieve it.

This is best done on the same day when the mailman is still out delivering but you might still be able to get a resolution.

I’ve done this twice and both times the mailman showed up with my package within an hour after I called. Both times he delivered it to the same house number as mine but on a different street.

You’re spot on, OldHercDude OldHercDude . I like the texture and grip on the Range Pro’s, but it is harder to clip to my pocket than something like a Micarta 112 Slim Pro with the original short and wide pocket clip (best clip ever!). I considered taking the clip off and stropping (for lack of a better word) the handle on something like denim or such to knock some of the newness off, but I decided to be patient and wait and see how it wears in, and if it chews up my pants or not. So far, so good, and no more wear on my pants than what is normal with carrying any knife on a daily basis.

I’m a little surprised that Buck Knives Inc. Buck Knives Inc. didn’t take a page out of Spyderco’s book and put a smooth oval anvil logo in the plastic scales at the point where the clip contacts the scales on each side to smooth the contact with pants fabric on one side, and show the branding on the other (Southpaw friendly no matter which side you put the clip on). A Delica 4 is a perfect example of this. Actually, instead of the anvil logo, they could bring back one of the old logos from the 300 series shields, and mold that in. A perfect time to breathe new life into the knife, hammer, and bolt! Maybe on an upcoming release? I’m sure the molds are already produced for the next knife in the series, so I’m guessing it might be 18-24 months before such a suggestion could be implemented.

Here are the Ranges alongside a Script Micarta 500. I’m carrying the Mini and the 500 today, and still making a conscious decision to reach for the Mini first. Yesterday was mostly boring stuff like Amazon packages, scraping a label off a metal part, cutting hanging threads on a shirt, etc.

I was able to pick this up at the factory last month. It is a Founders release. I’ve carried and used it almost everyday since. The scales are aluminum but I do not find them slick at all. For comparison to other aluminum scaled knives I have, they are every bit as grippy as my Pro-Tech Strider PT and waaaay grippier than my Kershaw Bel Air. While the Kershaw is a solid knife, it is just too slippery for me to comfortably use so I don’t carry it much. IMG_3855.jpeg

Despite the angle of the picture and the perspective from a tiny phone camera lens, the handles/closed lengths of the 591 and 791 are identical.

Just imagine the blade shapes and combinations we have to look forward to in the next year or so of stealth runs, BOTM offerings, and Web Specials. I think we got a glimpse in one of the Range marketing videos that Buck put out recently on X or Facebook (probably both). Maybe a non-Luddite can find it and post it here?

I would jump on a canvas or burlap Micarta Range with that Paradigm blade shape in a non-powder metallurgy steel. Or the clip point version from the Micarta 112 Slim Pro.

Well, tomorrow - Friday - will be one week with my Ranges. In my quest to see what the “little” Mini can handle, I haven’t cut a single thing with the full-size Range yet. It’s been riding in my laptop bag or car console most of the week.

So, remembering that I sharpened the Mini out of the box when I got it home last Friday, I wanted to see how it was holding up after a week of use. Yup, still hair whittling sharp. Granted, my eyebrows aren’t the finest or the most silky-smooth hairs on the planet, but it still whittles them, nonetheless. LOL!

I call that a win. :)
