I am about to order the RD6 and was wondering if there is anything worth getting customized on the knife. I love the knife currently and think with a few things here and there, it can be more effective and look better. If you guys have any ideas on good customizations for this knife or have anyideas it would be great to hear them.

If you order it from Justin he will grind it thinner than usual if you ask him. I did on my RD-6 and I'm glad I did -- otherwise the edge is pretty thick.

He will also leave it uncoated if you want. I did this on my RD-6, and while I think it looks better, the 5160 will stain -- with use mine has got a couple of small stains, but never rust. Just something to consider.

Justin will basically do whatever you want on teh knife for a nominal increase in price. He's really a great guy.

Thin the edge and add some notches along the thumb ramp and a 1/2 in or so down the spine. It gives a better grip when using the choil.

How much did it cost to get your edge grinded down? What are the advantages and disadvantages of a thinner edge? What do I tell him if i wanted this done to my knife?

IIRC, Justin doesn't charge extra for a thinner grind. The advantage is that the knife will cut much better with a thinner edge. When you ask him to make it thin, in reality, he makes it moderately thin -- nothing extreme. Justin has stated that he tends to leave the edge thick, although I believe he more recently said he's moving away from that.

With a thinner edge, and a 15 degree per side edge bevel (which I added myself), the knife cuts beautifully but I can still baton with it without rolling the edge. I've done the same thing with my RD-7, and I've even gone through hard knots without any damage to the edge.

Some would also say that uncoated cuts though things better too because the blade has less drag, though I've never really tried to see if there's a real difference.

Those may not be Justin's exact words, but when I ordered my RD6, I was looking to make some mods on it. It was to be a middle range knife, between the small SAK and the big khukuri. So he told me that he tought the standart model would be ok for my needs and that I did not need to spend more on extra mods.

Write to Justin, he will probably answer faster and better than us: justin@rangerknives.com

Does anyone have any pictures of the RD6 with the thinner grind and the jimping on the spine? I'm seriously considering this blade with these options. I'm looking for photos of Justins work. Thanks.

Thanks for the Link mmmotorcycle. Thats exactly what I was looking for. They sure are some sweet blades. So many knives, such small paychecks!

Justin's work is awesome as is. You don't necessarily need anything extra.

Can anyone tell what is the normal edge thickness in RD?

I'm working on ordering a custom from him now, just waiting for a confirmation.
Should be sweeeet!

Justin is going to hook me up with a thin ground 3/16" RD4 with black scales and red spacers. Should be sweet, and the price is unbelievable for a custom blade. I'm excited.

Congrats! You will LOVE it! I can do everything a Mora can do well and it can be used to split and batton wood. If yours isn't coated I would suggest getting some: http://www.newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=3610 so that you can keep the blade from rusting. Again, great choice!
