Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

Oh well..Guess we'll have to wait.:p

Added the Chris Reeve Sebenza 25 in S35VN.

The July/August Issue of Knives Illustrated is available now so I can post the results, I have a full Review and Test in this issue for those who are interested. :)

320 cuts, outgunned even by AEB-L and more than doubled by Estrella's custom knife based on same steel :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Those knives are .006" behind edge while the 25 is .021".

Or lets say the Sebenza is 3X as thick behind the edge than the others.

I know, I know buddy. Yet from an high (VERY HIGH) priced semi-custom knife something MORE it is to be expected indeed.
I've been doing since a week a side by side comparison of a Large 21 Sebbie against my own #22/100 Fantoni H.B. 01 S125V (0.028" behind the edge) (Edge Observer has a review with HT specs about this Fantoni). They cost the same here in Italy and EU, the differences in edge holding and edge stability are HUGE (>4x on a 1/2" manila rope, both at 20dps and 400 grit Naniwa Chosera finish).

Geometry can be and usually is a huge factor.

Start separating the knives by geometry and the steels will line right back up in order. ;)

Yes there will be a rather large difference between S30V/S35VN and S125V.

Cost doesn't really factor into it, steel type and geometry, that's assuming a proper HT.

Wear resistance isn't always the sum of all things. This knife is probably middle ground, stat wise, across the board, where they want it - A knife that anyone can EDC and maintain with good results.

The 25 is right where it should be IMO, performed excellent compared to the other knives with similar geometry and steels in the same ballpark, ELMAX and S30V.

I really like the 25 and the plain S30V Military which is surprisingly right next to it on the list. I honestly thought it would make less cuts.

Those are my 2 primary EDC's, well more the 25 these days. :)

Ehm ehm I disagree....
BTW: Ijust ended testing my own Fantoni Hide C.F. S30V @61.8 (verified). I'll let you know via PM about my findings.

Most production manufacturers don't run S30V above the 59-60 range and most are in the .020" to .028" range behind the edge from what I have seen over the years.

Same with S35VN, right in the same ranges normally.

Start going outside the norm thinning out the geometry and or bumping the hardness things will change as can be seen with the customs in the list.

There are reasons why production companies run their S30V the way they do and it is logical and I don't see it changing anytime soon for the most part.

They do it because they are making knives for the masses and have no idea how the knives will be used so they set the hardness and geometry to suit.
