Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

Jim especially has a corrupting effect on people lately. Even I'm not immune. I wonder if I could get a shot for it or if I should just keep going with the flow and helping this sector of the economy recover. Yeah, that's it. It doesn't sound as bad that way.

The upside is that the knives that I've been tempted to, and or bought have been well worth the price quality wise.

BTW, Aus 8 is used, along with Aus 6 in some pretty expensive knives in Japan. Best I can tell they don't seem to look down on these steels, accepting them for what they are.

Aus8 in a Moki knife performs pretty darn well too. I believe they use a better heat treat as it's like a different steel performance wise from, say, CRKT knives. The difference is fairly profound.

Wow that was fast Jim!

Do you think the CTS-20CP cuts as/less/more aggressively than the S90V?

Thanks!

Wich did better of top 2???????!!!!!!!! That's like ending the superbowl in a tie

Sofar they are the same to me from my testing, same model knives sharpened the same way cutting the same rope they scored the same.

I still have to do cardboard and wood to see if I can tell any difference in them.

Thanks for all your hard work Jim. This thread has been enormously helpful for so many of us.

Now if only Spyderco would make the Military in S90V/M390/CT-20P in production...we'd be all set!

i give you a double thanks. first on testing the CTS-20CP  and second for doing so expeditiously .

are you going to have the CTS-20CP rockwell tested or is it safe to assume it's around 60 HRC?

jim you have really been busy. i'm curious if these massive alloy results can be condensed when you inform the knifenuts or is it necessary for you to publish a short book? i certainly have enjoyed my models in m390 by b.m. in fact as a daily work folder m390 has surpassed zdp. the only minus with this alphabet alloy is the limited issues.[models] whether m390 can be issued in models comparing with spydie enduras cost wise is moot at present. i'm sure m390 popularity would greatly increase if not so expensive.---dennis

I will send it off once I am done testing it just to see. :)

Dennis,

We do need to see more models in M390 for sure. :)

Jim, I'm surprised to see ELMAX so far down.... I thought this was the end all and be all steel?

As you know I have an order with a certain maker coming due and I am under pressure to decide on which steel to go with.... now I am confused..... I was leaning toward M390 myself....

What's the scoop dude?

I didn't rank the custom in ELMAX.

The one that was ranked was the ZT 0551.
